This study explored the perceived change in tobacco use during the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated factors among older adults residing in Rohingya refugee camps, also referred to as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals in Bangladesh. The study followed a cross-sectional design and was conducted in October 2020 among 416 older adults aged 60 years and above. A purposive sampling technique was applied to identify eligible participants, and face-to-face interviews were conducted using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire to collect the data. Participants were asked if they noted any change in their tobacco use patterns (smoking or smokeless tobacco) during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to pre-pandemic. Binary logistic regression models determined the factors associated with the perceived change in tobacco use. More than one in five participants (22.4%) were current tobacco users, of whom 40.8% reported a perceived increase in tobacco use during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adjusted analysis revealed that participants who were concerned about COVID-19 had significantly ( < 0.05) lower odds of perceived increase in tobacco use (aOR = 0.22, 95% CI: 0.06-0.73), while older adults who were overwhelmed by COVID-19 (aOR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.06-1.18) and communicated less frequently with others during the pandemic than before (aOR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.03-1.20) had marginally significantly ( < 0.1) lower odds of perceived increase in tobacco use during this pandemic. Relevant stakeholders, policymakers, and practitioners need to focus on strengthening awareness-raising initiatives as part of an emergency preparedness plan to control tobacco use during such a crisis period.

The genus Alternaria comprises a wide range of ubiquitous plant pathogens that affect various host plants. Certain mycoviruses can induce changes in the biological characteristics and virulence of host fungi, offering potential for biocontrol in managing fungal plant diseases. Here, we identified a mycovirus with a high degree of homology to Alternaria arborescens victorivirus 1 (AaVV1), which was previously reported from Alternaria arborescens, in the QRH strain of the heterologous host Alternaria gomphrenae.

Methods: COPD prevalence was estimated for US adults aged 40+ years from Wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study (n = 12 296). Incidence analyses included adults from the initial sample without a COPD diagnosis (n = 6611).

Background: As part of its COVID-19 response, South Africa banned tobacco sales between March and August 2020. We examined self-reported tobacco use before, during and after the ban among a rural South African population with high HIV prevalence.
Methods: Between May 2021 and November 2022, we conducted a telephonic survey on tobacco use among a purposively selected subset of a population-based cohort in rural KwaZulu-Natal.

Methods: We use the nationally representative Household Budget Survey data from 2010 to 2022 to estimate changes in smoking behaviour in response to cigarette affordability at both the extensive and intensive margins. Combining these estimates with European Health Interview Survey data, we simulate the effects of excise hikes for smoking prevalence and consumption in 2025-2027.

Methods: An integrated framework encompassing social cognitive theory and the risk and protective factors approach guided the study using a pre-post quasi-experimental design and z-test analysis. Same-group and independent group comparisons within and across school grades, intervention years, and jurisdictions were conducted in a quasi-experimental design.
