Article Abstract

Unlabelled: A sense of community benefits medical trainees by preserving mental well-being, nurturing collegiality and mentorship, and grounding ties with partnering organizations and services. Within medical school, building these support relationships often begins shortly after matriculation. In the current pandemic and the accompanying shift to a virtual class format, we believe that a dedicated effort to foster this sense of community is crucial for students who otherwise may feel untethered to their new learning environment. Here, we detail tips for building a medical school community virtually in the COVID-19 era between peers, within the school institution, and within the surrounding environment.

Dual-Tendon Transfer for Chronic Extensor Pollicis Longus Ruptures: Augmented Extensor Indicis Proprius Transfer with Proximal EPL Stump Lengthening.

JBJS Essent Surg Tech

September 2025

Division of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Department of Orthopedics, Olympia Hospital & Research Centre, Trichy, Tamilnadu, India.

Background: Extensor indicis proprius (EIP) transfer augmented with proximal extensor pollicis longus (EPL) stump lengthening restores thumb extension and optimizes function in cases of chronic EPL tendon ruptures, which impair hand dexterity and fine motor skills. Traditional EIP-to-EPL transfers often disrupt the natural oblique course of the EPL around the Lister tubercle, leading to functional deficits. This dual-tendon transfer preserves anatomical alignment and improves thumb biomechanics, enhancing extension strength and the adduction moment arm at the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint.

Optimal guiding methods for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt creation: Characteristics of intravascular ultrasound other techniques.

World J Hepatol

August 2025

Department of Interventional Therapy, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100021, China.

A recent study in examined the use of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) creation. The study concluded that IVUS significantly reduces procedure time, radiation exposure, and the number of needle passes compared to conventional fluoroscopic guidance. IVUS offers real-time visualization of the portal vein, but challenges remain in terms of equipment costs and the operator learning curve.

Background And Aims: The complex landscape of hybridization and apomixis that characterizes the genus Boechera (Brassicaceae) is only beginning to be understood. Boechera, with over 80 recognized sexual species predominantly in North America, has emerged as a key model system for studying apomixis, primarily because of its remarkable capacity to form apomictic hybrids. This study builds on recent Hyb-Seq analyses by incorporating seven phased apomictic taxa into an existing topology of 108 sexual samples, thereby enhancing the existing phylogenetic framework and refining our understanding of the taxonomy of Boechera.

Nationally, midwifery educators are often perplexed when graduates from their programs are not successful on the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) certification examination. Often, these students are excellent clinically and have a deep foundational knowledge. During examination reviews with professors, they may be able to explain a concept well orally but struggle to pick the correct answer.

Cognitive functioning is a core symptom domain in psychotic disorders that can be examined both objectively and subjectively. We argue for greater clinical focus on subjective cognitive complaints, which have been neglected historically due to concerns about insight and weak relationships with objective test results. Subjective cognitive functions are important to consumers, affect their quality of life, and influence their motivation to participate in cognitive-enhancing treatments.
