Article Abstract

Cornelian cherry ( L.) fruits possess potential cardiovascular, lipid-lowering and hypoglycemic bioactivities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of resin-purified cornelian cherry extract rich in iridoids and anthocyanins on several transcription factors, intima/media ratio in aorta and serum parameters, which determine or are valuable indicators of the adverse changes observed in the course of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. For this purpose, male New Zealand rabbits were fed a diet enriched in 1% cholesterol for 60 days. Additionally, one group received 10 mg/kg b.w. of cornelian cherry extract and the second group 50 mg/kg b.w. of cornelian cherry extract. PPAR-α and PPAR-γ expression in the aorta, LXR-α expression in the liver; cholesterol, triglycerides, adipokines, apolipoproteins, glucose and insulin levels in serum; the intima and media diameter in the thoracic and abdominal aorta were determined. Administration of cornelian cherry extract resulted in an enhancement in the expression of all tested transcription factors, a decrease in triglycerides, leptin and resistin, and an increase in adiponectin levels. In addition, a significant reduction in the I/M ratio was observed for both the thoracic and abdominal aorta. The results we have obtained confirm the potential contribution of cornelian cherry extract to mitigation of the risk of developing and the intensity of symptoms of obesity-related cardiovascular diseases and metabolic disorders such as atherosclerosis or metabolic syndrome.

A high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) method was optimized and validated for the simultaneous analysis of 16 phenolic compounds, namely gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, -hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, chlorogenic acid, vanillin, syringic acid, coumaric acid, epicatechin, ferulic acid, sinapic acid, salicylic acid, resveratrol, and quercetin, in edible fruits from spontaneous species. Following the validation protocol, the proposed analytical method met the criteria of specificity, linearity, precision, and accuracy. The validated method was then applied for the analysis of phenolic compounds in fruits of hawthorn (), cornelian cherry (), rosehip (), and blueberry ().

Background: Given the essential role of cardiometabolic risk factors in the global burden of chronic diseases, this study aimed to assess the potential of cornelian cherry(.) in improving anthropometric parameters, lipid profile, glycemic indices, liver enzyme levels, and dietary intake of energy and macronutrients.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library for eligible randomized controlled trials(RCTs) published up to May 2025, with no restrictions on language or publication date.

The aim of the study was to assess the effect of time (20-50 min) and temperature (160-220 °C) of roasting on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of cornelian cherry ( L.) stones and to select extraction solvents (water and 50% and 80% methanol) to obtain reliable results. To maintain the highest content of bioactive compounds with a high level of antioxidant properties, roasting at a temperature of 160-180 °C for 30-40 min should be considered optimal.

Sleep deprivation (SD) induces significant neurobiological changes, including oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and behavioural impairments. This study was designed as a proof of concept to assess the potential for modulating the effects of SD through a short-term seven-day administration of () in a rapid eye movement (REM) SD rodent paradigm. Adult male Wistar rats were randomised in four groups (n = 7): control, (CM), sleep deprivation (SD), and sleep deprivation with (SD + CM).

Obesity and its related metabolic disorders have been a global concern in health care over the past few decades. Lifestyle modification and evidence-based dietary interventions, including the usage of nutraceuticals with minimal adverse effects, have gained widespread recognition as effective strategies for obesity management. Cornelian cherry, scientifically identified as (CM) is rich in anthocyanins, flavonoids, tannins, and polyphenols, with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, and hypolipidemic properties.
