is a coccidian parasite associated with acute or chronic gastroenteritis in immunocompromised patients. Dissatisfactory sensitivity of microscopy as the diagnostic standard approach has been described. Here, we comparatively evaluated two real-time PCRs targeting ribosomal RNA gene sequences of in stool in a test comparison without a reference standard applying latent class analysis. Therefore, 1000 stool samples from Ghanaian HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) patients (n = 905) as well as military returnees from the tropics (n = 95) were assessed by both assays in parallel. After the exclusion of 33 samples showing PCR inhibition, 29 and 33 positive results were recorded with the 5.8S rRNA gene/ITS-2 sequence PCR and the ITS-2 sequence PCR, respectively, resulting in an accuracy-adjusted prevalence of 3.2%. Nearly perfect agreement between both assays was indicated by Fleiss' kappa of 0.933 with sensitivity and specificity of 92.8% and 100% as well as 100% and 99.8% for the 5.8S rRNA gene/ITS-2 sequence PCR and the ITS-2 sequence PCR, respectively. Both assays proved to be suitable for the diagnosis of in human stool samples with slightly better sensitivity of the ITS-2 sequence assay, while the 5.8S rRNA gene/ITS-2 sequence PCR may be considered for confirmatory testing.

The ability of parasitoid wasps to precisely locate hosts in complex environments is a key factor in suppressing pest populations. Chemical communication plays an essential role in mediating insect behaviors such as locating food sources, hosts, and mates. Odorant receptors (ORs) are the key connection between external odors and olfactory nerves.

High rates of mortality of the common cockle, , have occurred in the Wash Estuary, UK, since 2008. A previous study linked the mortalities to a novel genotype of , with a strong correlation between cockle moribundity and the presence of . Here, we characterize a novel iridovirus, identified by chance during metagenomic sequencing of a gradient purification of cells, with the presence also correlated to cockle moribundity.

Background: Tecovirimat (TPOXX) is an antiviral authorized for the treatment of mpox infections in Canada, but recent clinical trials found it has no impact on symptom duration.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of individuals diagnosed with mpox in Toronto, Canada. Skin lesion swabs were collected weekly to quantify infectious monkeypox virus (MPXV) shedding through cell culture.

Background: Salmonella enterica encompasses over 2,600 serovars, including several commonly associated with severe infection in humans. Salmonella is a major cause of sepsis in Africa; however, diagnosis requires clinical microbiology facilities. Environmental surveillance has the potential to play a role in Salmonella surveillance.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a prevalent intestinal pathogen that significantly impacts both human and animal health. G83, isolated from giant panda feces, has demonstrated notable probiotic properties. In this study, C57BL/6 J mice were randomly divided into Control, ETEC, and G83 groups.
