Article Abstract

Background: Mangosteen and propolis extracts (MAEC) have been potential therapeutic agents known to exhibit powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinical and immunological efficacy of MAEC as well as safety and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) on gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.

Methods: This study was performed on 104 patients diagnosed with gingivitis or incipient periodontitis. At baseline, the participants were randomly allocated to either the test group, with daily intake of a single capsule containing 194 mg of MAEC for eight weeks, or control group, with placebo. Clinical periodontal evaluation and immunological parameters from saliva and gingival sulcular fluid were assessed at baseline, four, and eight weeks. Individual PROMs were assessed by OHIP-14 questionnaires.

Results: There was a significant difference of modified gingival index at four and eight weeks between the test and control groups. In the test group, crevicular interleukin (IL)-6 was reduced, and the salivary matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 was increased after eight weeks. PROMs were improved up to four weeks compared to placebo.

Conclusion: Oral administration of MAEC would have a potential to reduce gingival inflammation clinically and immunologically in the patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis.

Background: The diagnosis of periodontitis is primarily through clinical and radiographic assessments. However, it is difficult for clinicians to detect incipient periodontitis during the routine clinical assessment. Identifying people at risk for periodontitis and tracking disease development need a dependable biomarker.

To evaluate the cytotoxicity of Curodont (an alternative tooth varnish that promotes remineralization of incipient lesions using a self-assembling peptide P11-4) on soft tissue concerning gingival fibroblasts (GF) and assess survivability, proliferation, and attachment compared to silver diammine fluoride (SDF) and fluoride varnish (FV) as controls. Assessment of cell proliferation, survivability, and attachment was accomplished by studying the effects of varying concentrations of Curodont on gingival fibroblasts. Proliferation, survivability, and attachment were measured using Calcein-AM (a fluorescent dye that labels only living cells) via a microplate reader.

This study investigated the efficacy and safety of a propolis-mangosteen extract complex (PMEC) on gingival health in patients with gingivitis and incipient periodontitis. A multicentered, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 104 subjects receiving either PMEC or placebo for eight weeks was conducted. The primary focus was on the changes in inflammatory biomarkers from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), with clinical parameters as secondary outcomes.

Herbal Mouthrinses for Prevention of Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review.

Int J Clin Pediatr Dent

April 2024

Department of Biostatistics, Centre for Biostatistics and Evidence‑Based Medicine, Vellore, Tamil Nadu; Department of Research, Narayana Dental College and Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Unlabelled: The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of herbal mouthrinses (HMR) on caries prevention in children and adolescents. In addition, this systematic review assessed its effectiveness in remineralization of white spot lesions, reduction of halitosis, and improving gingival and periodontal health in orthodontic patients and patients with special healthcare needs (SHCN). A comprehensive bibliographic search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Central, EMBASE, AMED, ProQuest, CINAHL, AYUSH, Digital Helpline for Ayurveda Research Articles (DHARA), and Clinical Trial Gov databases.
