We describe the case of a 56-year-old-man with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy affected by acute hypercapnic failure secondary to pneumonia treated with high flow nasal cannula, intermittent abdominal ventilation, and negative pressure ventilation. The patient did not tolerate noninvasive positive pressure ventilation and refused invasive ventilation and tracheostomy. We successfully experienced a novel approach combining high flow nasal cannula with cycles of intermittent abdominal pressure ventilation and negative pressure ventilation.

Muscle metaboreflex is activated in limb skeletal muscles during high-intensity exercise that increases respiratory demand, but its effects on respiratory muscle blood flow remain unknown. Therefore, we investigated whether metaboreflex activation in the forearm alters blood flow in the intercostal muscles. Sixteen healthy young male subjects performed isometric handgrip at 30% of maximal voluntary contraction for 2 minutes, followed by either post-exercise muscle ischemia (PEMI; metaboreflex activation condition) or a control recovery.

To minimize the occupational radiation hazards for workers in uranium or associated radioactive underground mines, it is necessary to control the radon exposure dose in each branch of the mine ventilation network. Firstly, a mathematical model of determining potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) of radon daughters in a single branch was proposed on the basis of the previous radon concentration calculation model in the ventilation network considering ventilation pressure drop. Then, two estimation models of radon exposure dose based on the equilibrium radon concentration and PAEC of radon daughters are introduced.

Importance: Propofol is a first-line sedative for adults receiving invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). However, it can contribute to hemodynamic instability, especially during intubation. The magnitude, timing, risk factors, and variability of sedation-associated mean arterial pressure (MAP) changes remain poorly characterized in ICU settings.

Mean airway pressure, a monitored variable continuously available on the modern ventilator, is the pressure measured at the airway opening averaged over the time needed to complete the entire respiratory cycle. Mean airway pressure is well recognized to connect three key physiologic processes in mechanical ventilation: physical stretch, cardiovascular dynamics, and pulmonary gas exchange. Although other parameters currently employed in adults to determine "safe" ventilation are undoubtedly valuable for daily practice, all have limitations for continuous monitoring of ventilation hazard.

Background: Monosomy 45,X is commonly associated with congenital heart defects, particularly coarctation of the aorta (CoA). In this case, the patient developed respiratory distress due to hemodynamic instability from a large bidirectional patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) shunt and systemic hypoperfusion secondary to CoA, which complicated diagnosis and management.
Case Presentation: We report a 34-week premature female neonate weighing 1.
