To our knowledge, no studies on health conditions in U.S. military firefighters exist. Data and demographics from the Defense Medical Epidemiology Database were analyzed on several shared medical issues among military personnel and civilian firefighters. Descriptive statistics and Chi-Square goodness of fit tests were conducted to support study aims. Between 2001 and 2015, substantial incidence rate increases (per 10,000) of tinnitus, PTSD, insomnia, and OSA (2005-2015) were observed. Modest to large increases in depressive disorders, adjustment reaction, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder were observed. Decreasing rates were observed for alcohol dependence, hypertension, and tobacco use disorder. While efforts have examined the impact of sustained operations on military members, first responder military subgroups like firefighters are deficient. Cognitive Behavior Therapy interventions are efficacious for preventing and reducing behavioral health problems; therefore, tailoring them specifically for U.S. military firefighters could significantly improve quality of life and long-term health.

In January 2019, the state of Minas Gerais was struck by an environmental tragedy resulting from the collapse of the Córrego do Feijão Mine Dam, in Brumadinho. On this occasion, the Military Fire Brigade of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ) designated specialized teams for emergency intervention, in aid of agents from the local corporation involved in providing care and support to victims and residents of the affected areas. However, these professionals were exposed to mud containing substances that cause harm to health.

Background: Chagas heart disease (ChD) is a significant public health concern in Latin America, contributing to a high incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Despite advances in heart failure treatment, management of Chagas cardiomyopathy has not progressed accordingly. While ICDs are effective for primary and secondary prevention in other conditions, patients with ChD often experience more frequent episodes of ventricular tachycardia, and ICD use may provide a negative impact and increase mortality.

Based on conservation of resources (COR) theory, this study explored the relationships between vicarious traumatization, work alienation, and work stress in firefighters. The vicarious traumatization questionnaire, the work alienation questionnaire, and the work stress questionnaire were used to survey 397 in-service firefighters. The results showed that (1) firefighters' vicarious traumatization significantly and positively predicted their work stress and (2) firefighters' work alienation mediated that relationship.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are common soil and groundwater contaminants that persist in the environment. Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) has been a key component in aqueous film-forming foams, extensively used for firefighting in both military and civilian applications, including at oil refineries. During firefighting training, fuels have been historically used to ignite fires, and because of its use in foams, PFOS is often found alongside light nonaqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) petroleum hydrocarbons in subsurface soils and groundwater.
