Article Abstract

In this Letter, we present a holography-based structured light illumination (SLI) method to enhance the resolution of widefield temporal focusing microscopy (TFM). In the system, a digital micromirror device is employed to simultaneously disperse the incoming femtosecond laser to induce temporal focusing at the focal plane and generate designed structured patterns via a Lee hologram. As the generated structured patterns do not contain the zeroth order beam, it improves the contrast and modulation frequency. Mathematical models have been derived to calculate the electric fields at the focal plane and to explain the effects of improved optical cross-sectioning capability. Imaging experiments have been devised and performed on fluorescent beads and mouse kidney sections; the results demonstrate enhanced axial confinement and improved suppression of out-of-focus fluorescence. The new SLI method realizes high-resolution TFM and can be readily applied to other microscopy platforms for biophotonics applications.

Causes of Death After Surgery Among Cancer Patients: A Population-based Cohort Study.

Introduction: Recent advancements in surgical techniques and perioperative care have improved cancer survival rates, yet postoperative comorbidity and mortality remain a critical concern. Despite progress in cancer control, systematic analyses of long-term mortality trends and competing risks in surgery-intervened cancer populations are lacking. This study aimed to quantify temporal patterns of postoperative mortality causes across 21 solid cancers and identify dominant non-cancer risk factors to inform survivorship care strategies.

The paper first highlights important drawbacks and biases related to the common use of time-rescaling to assess the goodness-of-fit (Gof) of self-exciting temporal point process (SETPP) models. Then it presents a new predictive time-rescaling approach leading to an asymptotically unbiased Gof framework for general SETPPs in the case of single observed trajectories. The predictive approach focuses on forecasting accuracy and addresses the bias problem resulting from the plugged-in estimated parameters.

Objective: This study aims to analyze the temporal trends in the incidence and prevalence of anorexia nervosa (AN) in China from 1992 to 2021, focusing on age, period, and cohort effects, in order to provide evidence for the prevention and control of anxiety-related disorders.

Methods: Data on the incidence and prevalence of anorexia nervosa in China were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Joinpoint regression analysis was employed to assess trends over time, while an age-period-cohort (APC) model was used to estimate the net effects of age, period, and cohort variables.

Background: This study examines trends in delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid (THC-COOH) positivity rates in pre-employment urine drug screenings at a single university-based hospital occupational medicine clinic from 2017 to 2022, following California's recreational cannabis legalization in 2016, with sales beginning officially on January 1, 2018.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of 21,546 de-identified urine drug screenings from 2017 to 2022 was conducted. Initial screening used instant urine drug immunoassays (50 ng/mL cutoff for THC-COOH), followed by confirmatory gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (15 ng/mL cutoff).

Queer temporality in Tony Kushner's angels in America.

Tony Kushner's Angels in America, written in two parts during the early 1990s, vividly depicts the experiences of queer individuals confronting the AIDS crisis. Examined through the framework of anocriticism and queer temporality, the play challenges traditional life trajectories focused on reproduction, aging, and progress. Drawing on the work of theorists such as Roberta Maierhofer, Jack Halberstam, and Elizabeth Freeman, this analysis investigates how the play's fragmented narrative and interplay of supernatural and historical elements blur the boundaries between past, present, and future.
