Mercury (Hg) pollution is a global environmental problem. The abiotic formation of dimethylmercury (DMeHg) from monomethylmercury (MMeHg) may account for a large portion of DMeHg in oceans. Previous experimental work has shown that abiotic formation of DMeHg from MMeHg can be facilitated by reduced sulfur groups on sulfide mineral surfaces. In that work, a mechanism was proposed in which neighboring MMeHg moieties bound to sulfide sites on a mineral surface react through an S2-type mechanism to form DMeHg and incorporate the remaining Hg atoms into the mineral surface. Here, we perform density functional theory calculations to explore the mechanisms of DMeHg formation on the 110 surface of a CdS(s) (hawleyite) nanoparticle. We show that coordination of MMeHg substituents to adjacent reduced sulfur groups protruding from the surface indeed facilitates DMeHg formation and that the reaction proceeds through direct transmethylation from one MMeHg substituent to another. Coordination of Hg by multiple S atoms provides a transition-state stabilization and activates a C-Hg bond for methyl transfer. In addition, solvation effects play an important role in the surface reconstruction of the nanoparticle and in decreasing the energetic barrier for DMeHg formation relative to the corresponding reaction in vacuo.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based electrochemical sensor has been developed for the selective detection of naringenin (NAR) in various real-world samples, including plant extracts, wine, and herbal supplements. To enhance the active surface area and porosity of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE), a 2D/0D nanocomposite composed of graphene oxide (GO) and cobalt ferrite (CFO) nanoparticles, CFO_GO, was incorporated into the sensor design. 4-aminobenzoic acid (4-ABA) was selected as the functional monomer to prepare the MIPs.

Corrosive sulfur compounds and trace moisture were key factors causing the rapid deterioration of finished mineral oils. In power systems, insulating oil contaminated by such substances not only threatens the stable operation of power equipment but also transforms into hazardous waste due to performance degradation. This study innovatively developed a sulfur-modified TiO-loaded SiO nanocomposite (S-nTDSGS) adsorbent, which was comprehensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and specific surface area analysis.

Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has demonstrated considerable regenerative potential in regenerative endodontic treatment, its clinical efficacy may be limited by the rapid degradation of its bioactive components, leading to inconsistent outcomes. To overcome this challenge, the present study explores the use of nano-sized exosomes derived from PRP-a novel designated as PRP exosomes (PRP-Exo)-as a more stable and targeted biomolecular delivery system to promote odontogenic differentiation within the dentin-pulp complex. The primary objective is to investigate the expression of key odontogenic markers, transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and Dentin Sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), in human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) following PRP-Exo treatment.

With the rapid development of the nuclear medicine business worldwide, the removal of iodine-131 from specific contaminated environments to protect public health has important application prospects. In this study, the surface decontamination mechanism of Ce(IV)/HNO3 as a decontaminant for iodine-131-contaminated nonmetallic materials was investigated by using an orthogonal experimental method and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). During the preparation experiments with the contaminated materials, both quartz glass and ceramics reached peak activity concentration levels at 4 h of adsorption (contamination) by using immersion; the decontamination factor (DF) was selected as the test index for the decontamination experiments.

Occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) remains a significant health concern in metal and nonmetal (MNM) mining operations, contributing to the development of silicosis, lung cancer, and other chronic respiratory conditions. This review examines the prevalence and effects of RCS exposure in MNM mining environments, the toxicity of silica dust, and the effectiveness of regulatory interventions aimed at controlling exposure and mitigating health hazards. Key factors influencing RCS concentrations, including mine type, size, and geographic location, are analyzed, with particular focus on the impact of recent regulatory updates from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
