Climate change is projected to increase the intensity and frequency of drought in several regions, potentially impacting aphid-virus-plant relationships. Here, we investigated the combined effects of water regime and virus infection on plant traits, virus transmission, and aphid feeding behaviour. Two factorial experiments were established that combined (i) four virus treatments: single infection with cucumber mosaic virus, CMV (non-persistent), single infection with cucurbit aphid-borne yellows virus CABYV (persistent), double infection and mock control, with (ii) five water regimes on melon cv.

Background: Citrus greening, or Huanglongbing (HLB), one of the most devastating citrus diseases worldwide, is caused by the phloem-limited bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' and transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri). Current disease control strategies rely primarily on insecticide applications to suppress vector populations, leading to environmental concerns and limited efficacy. Anthocyanins are plant secondary metabolites known for their protective roles against biotic and abiotic stresses.

Sterols are essential for eukaryotic cell structure and metabolism, yet insects cannot synthesize them de novo and must acquire them through their diet. For insect herbivores, plant-derived sterols are typically converted into cholesterol to support development and reproduction. We previously engineered Arabidopsis thaliana lines with silenced HYD1, resulting in altered sterol composition.

Many herbivorous insects feed on unbalanced diets and rely on bacterial endosymbionts to meet all their nutritional needs. This is the case for the pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum), a plant pest whose remarkable growth and reproductive capacities cannot be sustained by its sole nutritional resource, the plant phloem sap, and which relies on a symbiotic relationship maintained over millions of years with the intracellular bacterium Buchnera aphidicola for the biosynthesis of amino acids and vitamins. Insect population dynamics profoundly affect the potential for a species to serve as a pest, highlighting the importance of proper quantification and monitoring of insect reproduction. Important measurements of reproduction include individual female egg load and realized fecundity, which can be affected by insect longevity and host quality. Aster leafhoppers (Macrosteles quadrilineatus Forbes) are an important pest in Western Canada and the upper Midwest of the United States, yet little is known about factors influencing their fecundity, and thus, population dynamics.
