The speciose mammalian order Eulipotyphla (moles, shrews, hedgehogs, solenodons) combines an unusual diversity of semi-aquatic, semi-fossorial, and fossorial forms that arose from terrestrial forbearers. However, our understanding of the ecomorphological pathways leading to these lifestyles has been confounded by a fragmentary fossil record, unresolved phylogenetic relationships, and potential morphological convergence, calling for novel approaches. The net surface charge of the oxygen-storing muscle protein myoglobin (Z), which can be readily determined from its primary structure, provides an objective target to address this question due to mechanistic linkages with myoglobin concentration. Here, we generate a comprehensive 71 species molecular phylogeny that resolves previously intractable intra-family relationships and then ancestrally reconstruct Z evolution to identify ancient lifestyle transitions based on protein sequence alone. Our phylogenetically informed analyses confidently resolve fossorial habits having evolved twice in talpid moles and reveal five independent secondary aquatic transitions in the order housing the world's smallest endothermic divers.

Purpose: Cranial irradiation is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) deficits in childhood cancer survivors. We investigated the relationship between radiation dose to brain substructures and HRQoL in children with brain tumors treated with proton beam therapy (PBT).
Methods: Data were obtained from children in the Pediatric Proton/Photon Consortium Registry who received PBT for primary brain tumors between 2015 and 2021.

An interesting ruthenium(III) complex, -[Ru(HL)Cl(PPh)], has been synthesized using a redox-active tetradentate bis-azo diamine ligand (HL). This complex represents the first example of a structurally robust, air- and moisture-stable coordination compound featuring a redox non-innocent ligand that provides a unique N4 donor set comprising both strong π-acidic (azo) and σ-donating (amido) groups. The complex has been comprehensively characterized by elemental analysis, various spectroscopic techniques, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) studies.

Aims: Obesity is commonly hypothesized to lead to the development of heart failure (HF) in part due to increases in blood volume (BV) and left ventricular (LV) remodelling. Whether adiposity and obesity severity are associated with BV expansion and subsequent LV remodelling in middle-aged individuals at increased risk (IR) prior to the onset of HF is unknown.
