In this work, we have developed a new kind of nanocolumnar birefringent Bragg microcavity (BBM) that, tailored by oblique angle deposition, behaves as a selective transducer of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Unlike the atomic lattice origin of birefringence in anisotropic single crystals, in the BBM, it stems from an anisotropic self-organization at the nanoscale of the voids and structural elements of the layers. The optical adsorption isotherms recorded upon exposure of these nanostructured systems to water vapor and VOCs have revealed a rich yet unexplored phenomenology linked to their optical activity that provides both capacity for vapor identification and partial pressure determination. This photonic response has been reproduced with a theoretical model accounting for the evolution of the form birefringence of the individual layers upon vapor condensation in nanopores and internanocolumnar voids. BBMs that repel water vapor but are accessible to VOCs have been also developed through grafting of their internal surfaces with perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane molecules. These nanostructured photonic systems are proposed for the development of transducers that, operating under environmental conditions, may respond specifically to VOCs without any influence by the degree of humidity of the medium.

This study investigates the influence of chain length on the crystalline structure and thermodynamic behavior of side-chain polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-containing homopolymers. A series of precisely synthesized POSS-containing polymers with exact chain lengths was prepared using precision chemistry. Comprehensive characterization revealed that the covalent attachment of crystalline POSS cages to the polymer backbone confined their crystallization to a 2D lattice, fundamentally distinct from the chain-folding mechanism of conventional polymers.

This work aims to enhance the understanding of its internal structure and associated defects in its native form and after laser processing. Our observations show, for the first time, that the GLAD silica exhibits a unique Raman signature that converges to a typical silica spectrum following laser melting.

Phase matching (PM) of nonlinear optical interactions is central for obtaining efficient frequency conversion. Birefringent PM, which is highly useful in anisotropic nonlinear crystals, is limited by intrinsic bulk properties. However, application of this method can extend beyond natural constraints through form-birefringence in layered metamaterials.

This study investigates the nonclassical crystallization of cyamemazine L-tartrate, a kryptoracemic salt of the antipsychotic drug cyamemazine. The crystallization pathway was studied via slurry conversion of a suspension of cyamemazine and L-tartaric acid in 2-propanol to the salt. Notably, the system transitioned through an intermediate droplet phase, which subsequently coalesced to form a dense phase.

The myelin basic protein (MBP) is the most abundant intracellular protein of the myelin, which forms the electrically insulating sheath of axons of many actively functioning neurons. This protein binds the opposite membranes of the flattened processes of oligodendrocytes and plays a crucial role in myelin compaction. Here we show that MBP is present in amyloid form in the oligodendrocytes in the brain of vertebrates.
