Article Abstract

Paediatric patients with cancer and those undergoing haematopoietic cell transplantation are at high risk of bacterial infections. The 8th European Conference on Infections in Leukaemia (ECIL-8) convened a Paediatric Group to review the literature and to formulate recommendations for the use of antibiotics according to the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases grading system. The evaluation of antibacterial prophylaxis included mortality, bloodstream infection, febrile neutropenia, emergence of resistance, and adverse effects as endpoints. Initial antibacterial therapy and antibiotic de-escalation or discontinuation focused on patients with a clinically stable condition and without previous infection or colonisation by resistant bacteria, and on patients with a clinically unstable condition or with previous infection or colonisation by resistant bacteria. The final considerations and recommendations of the ECIL-8 Paediatric Group on antibacterial prophylaxis, initial therapy, and de-escalation strategies are summarised in this Policy Review.

Importance: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with a substantial burden. Standardized global prevalence estimates and data on associated sociodemographic and risk factors are lacking.

Objective: To estimate the global prevalence of HS and study differences in prevalence by age, sex, geographical location, body mass index (BMI; calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared), smoking status, gross domestic product (GDP), and Human Development Index (HDI).

August 2025

Global Health Development, Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network, Amman, Jordan.

The concept of multisectoral coordination has been comprehensively described in multiple internationally recognized frameworks. However, the institutionalization of the concept is highly complex and requires further exploration. During the 8th Biennial Regional Conference of the Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network (EMPHNET), a roundtable session brought together a panel of global and regional experts in multisectoral coordination to share knowledge and expertise, regarding the concept of multisectoral coordination, and the implementation and formalization of coordination mechanisms within national structures, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR).

Risk for neurodevelopmental disorders can be related to early immune stimulations and altered brain microglial functions. Here we investigated the behavioural and electrophysiological effects of microglia depletion in a mouse model of developmental immune activation. C57BL/6J pregnant mice were exposed on gestational day 12.

Over recent decades comprehensive catalogues of vocal, facial, and gestural signals have been established for most great ape species; however, a systematic description of wild gorilla gestural behaviour, particularly of the Eastern gorilla species, remains missing. We address this absence by cataloguing the physical form of gestural units used by 49 habituated wild mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) from four social units in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda (n = 157 observation days over 8 months). We obtained a dataset of n = 3220 instances of intentional gesture, coded with a systematic ELAN-based framework (GesturalOrigins).
