A neutral Eu(iii) complex containing the S,S enantiomer of isoQC3A ligand (isoQC3A = N-isoquinolyl-N,N',N'-trans-l,2-cyclohexylenediaminetriacetate) was synthesized and characterized. The complex was spectroscopically investigated and the results compared with those obtained for the similar bis-anionic ligand bisoQcd (bisoQcd = N,N'-bis(2-isoquinolinmethyl)-trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane N,N'-diacetate). Both Eu(iii)-complexes show similar binding constants upon titration with the main analytes contained in interstitial extracellular fluid (i.e. hydrogen carbonate, serum albumin and citrate). However, the analyte affinity is accompanied by different enhancements of the Eu(iii) intrinsic quantum yield (QY). Structures and hydration numbers of the complexes are determined by luminescence decay measurements and DFT calculations. The QYs as well as the binding constants of the individual adducts of the complexes with hydrogen carbonate, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and citrate are determined. The study of the Eu(iii) emission upon the systematic variation of one analyte in a complex mixture has been carried out to predict the performance of the luminescent sensor in conditions close to the real extracellular environment. Both Eu(iii) complexes can detect citrate at extracellular concentrations up to 500 μM, even at millimolar concentrations of the other interfering species. In the case of the Eu(bisoQcd)OTf complex, an increase of 23% of the Eu(iii) luminescence intensity at 615 nm upon addition of 0.3 mM of citrate was recorded. This feature makes the latter complex a viable probe for luminescence analysis of citrate in a complex matrix.

Aortic valve stenosis is a progressive and increasingly prevalent disease in older adults, with no approved pharmacologic therapies to prevent or slow its progression. Although genetic risk factors have been identified, the contribution of epigenetic regulation remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated that histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) maintains aortic valve structure by suppressing mitochondrial biogenesis and preserving extracellular matrix integrity in valvular interstitial fibroblasts.

Cardiovascular diseases are increasingly recognized as chronic disorders driven by a complex interplay between inflammation and fibrosis. In this review, we elucidate emerging mechanisms that govern the transition from acute inflammation to pathological fibrosis, with particular focus on cellular crosstalk between neutrophils, macrophages, fibroblasts, and myofibroblasts. We explore how dysregulated immune responses and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling sustain a pathogenic feedback loop, promoting myocardial stiffening and adverse cardiac remodeling.

The development of biomimetic scaffolds that emulate the extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical for advancing cell-based therapies and tissue regeneration. This study reports the formulation of CHyCoGel, a novel injectable, ECM-mimetic hydrogel scaffold composed of chitosan, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, and an amphiphilic stabilizer. CHyCoGel addresses key limitations of existing scaffolds, offering improved structural uniformity, injectability, and gelation suitable for cell encapsulation and minimally invasive delivery.

Electrochemical synthesis of ammonia (NH) is a promising green alternative to the conventional Haber-Bosch process. Here, we report the synthesis of a heteroatomic metal-metal bonded dual atomic (DA) Mn-Cu catalytic site embedded within nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) matrix for high-performance electrochemical reduction of N to NH. The asymmetric electronic distribution localized at the dual atomic sites synergistically enhances the adsorption and activation of N, facilitating the complex proton-coupled electron transfer process.

The formation and recrystallization of ice crystals during freezing causes irreversible structural damage to the dough matrix, which is characterized by the cold denaturation of the gluten protein structure and the degradation of the gluten network structure. Polysaccharides are widely used to improve the quality of frozen dough owing to their excellent water-holding and viscosity. Current research has shown that polysaccharides mitigate the physical damage of ice crystals on the gluten protein structure mainly by modifying the water status of frozen dough to inhibit the ice crystallization process.
