Article Abstract

Background: The efficacy of a combination of nimotuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody to the epidermal growth factor receptor, with chemoradiation in locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was evaluated in a phase II study.

Methods: Patients with stage III/IV HNSCC received 3-weekly cisplatin 100 mg/m for three cycles and weekly nimotuzumab 200 mg for 8 weeks concurrently with radiotherapy. Primary endpoint was best overall response (BOR) and secondary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS).

Results: Thirty-seven patients were included; the majority were Chinese (76%), male (89%), and had stage IVA/IVB HNSCC (92%). BOR of complete and partial response was seen in 22/37 (59%) and 10/37 (27%) patients, respectively. Median PFS was 17.5 months (95% CI: 11.1-54.5) and 3-year PFS was 40.4% (95% CI: 24.3-55.9). The frequency and type of adverse events observed were similar to standard chemoradiation.

Conclusion: The combination of nimotuzumab with cisplatin and radiotherapy was safe and achieved high response rates in HNSCC.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved process through which cells degrade cytoplasmic substances via autophagosomes. During the initiation of autophagosome formation, the ULK/Atg1 complex serves as a scaffold that recruits and regulates downstream ATG/Atg proteins and ATG9/Atg9-containing vesicles. Despite the essential role of the ULK/Atg1 complex, its components have changed during evolution; the ULK complex in mammals consists of ULK1 (or ULK2), RB1CC1, ATG13, and ATG101, whereas the Atg1 complex in the yeast lacks Atg101 but instead has Atg29 and Atg31 along with Atg17.

Kinesin family member 14 (KIF14) has been implicated in the progression of multiple cancer types, yet its role in colorectal cancer (CRC) metastasis remains undefined. Here, we assesse KIF14 expression in CRC specimens and explore its clinical and functional significance. KIF14 upregulation is frequently observed in CRC tissues and is correlated with advanced tumor stage and reduced overall survival.

From BN-Dewar benzene to BN-benzvalene: a computational exploration of photoisomerization mechanisms.

This study explores the photochemical conversion of BN-Dewar benzene into BN-benzvalene derivatives, offering a strategic route to heteroatom-containing valence isomers with distinctive electronic properties. Using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and electron localization function (ELF) analyses, the excited-state mechanism and associated structural rearrangements were elucidated. Vertical excitation to the S state was found to weaken the CC and B-N bonds while strengthening the N-Si bond in silyl-substituted derivatives, a key factor enabling efficient BN-benzvalene formation.

The red-fronted brown lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) is an important species to the function of Madagascar's ecosystems, contributing to critical ecological processes such as seed dispersal. Given its ecological, as well as cultural, importance, genomic resources for E. rufifrons are valuable for understanding evolutionary history and informing conservation strategies.

Ampere-level electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (eNRA) offers a carbon-neutral alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, its energy efficiency is critically hampered by the inherent conflict between the reaction and diffusion. Herein, we propose a reaction-diffusion-coupled strategy implemented on a well-tailored CuCoNiRuPt high-entropy alloy aerogel (HEAA) to simultaneously realize energy barrier homogenization and accelerate mass transport, endowing ampere-level eNRA with a high energy efficiency.
