Article Abstract

Monitoring the prevalence of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) in pigs could be useful for managing transmission risk to humans. To optimize sampling for LA-MRSA monitoring, we compared the sensitivity of MRSA isolation from skin swabs taken behind the ear and nasal swabs collected from 276 pigs and investigated the prevalence of MRSA in their carcasses. MRSA was isolated from 40 behind the ear skin swabs (14.5%), which was statistically higher than the number isolated from nasal swabs (23 samples, 8.3%). MRSA prevalence in the carcasses was 0.4%. All MRSA isolates were sequence type 398 lineage. Sampling of both the skin behind the ear and nasal mucosa in a pig is recommended to investigate the prevalence of LA-MRSA in pigs.

Background: Tecovirimat (TPOXX) is an antiviral authorized for the treatment of mpox infections in Canada, but recent clinical trials found it has no impact on symptom duration.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of individuals diagnosed with mpox in Toronto, Canada. Skin lesion swabs were collected weekly to quantify infectious monkeypox virus (MPXV) shedding through cell culture.

Genital microbiota in infertile couples.

Reprod Biomed Online

May 2025

Research Question: What is the composition of bacterial communities at various genital sites and are there potential interactions between partners' microbiota?

Design: This observational study involved metagenomic analyses of samples collected from male and female partners of couples undergoing fertility treatment. Samples included vaginal and penile swabs, as well as follicular fluid and semen, which were analysed using next-generation sequencing.

Results: The bacterial community profiles of different genital tract niches were distinct, niche-specific compositions, with female samples predominantly featuring Lactobacillus species and male samples displaying greater microbial diversity, including genital-specific and skin-associated taxa.

Optimization of diagnostic testing is essential for the sustainable delivery of laboratory services. To date, little consideration has been given to the potential benefits of diagnostic stewardship to laboratories looking to reduce their environmental footprint. Implementing a pre-analytical diagnostic stewardship intervention for the testing of superficial wound swabs would result in a measurable reduction in the environmental footprint of the microbiology laboratory.

Effect of maternal HIV status on the early neonatal microbiome.

J Pediatric Infect Dis Soc

September 2025

Department of Pediatrics, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, U. S. A.

Microbiome disruption is a proposed mechanism for the observed differences in child health outcomes by maternal HIV status, but the early neonatal microbiome of HIV-exposed (HE) newborns is not well studied. We used 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid sequencing to analyze the microbiome composition of nasal, skin, and rectal samples collected ≤72 hours after birth from 57 hospitalized neonates in Botswana, 33% of whom were HE. Beta diversity differed by anatomic compartment (p=.

Invasive whistling frogs (Eleutherodactylus johnstonei) act as a reservoir for antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Latin America's most populous city.

Vet Res Commun

August 2025

Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva e Saúde Animal, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brasil.

Invasive species represent a significant threat to ecological balance and the maintenance of native populations. Besides, these have been associated with the emergence of pathogens of public health importance, including multidrug-resistant bacteria. This study aimed to screen and describe the antimicrobial resistance profile of clinically important Enterobacteriaceae species isolated from whistling frogs (Eleutherodactylus johnstonei), an invasive anuran species in São Paulo, Brazil.
