Desert-like areas located in the eastern portion of the state of Utah (USA) have geographic features that can resemble the surface of the planet Mars, characterized by red-colored hills, soils and sandstones. We examined the bacterial biodiversity of surface soil samples from several sites from the Colorado Plateau Desert in eastern Utah using pyrosequencing of PCR amplified bacterial 16S rRNA genes from total extracted soil DNA. The sample sites cover the Great Basin, Goblin Valley State Park and nearby regions on the Colorado Plateau. We also examined several physicochemical parameters of the soil samples to investigate any possible correlations between bacterial community structure and environmental drivers. The predominant bacterial phyla present in the samples were found to belong to members of the Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Gemmatimonadetes. The most abundant genera in our samples were found to belong to the Cesiribacter, Lysobacter, Adhaeribacter, Microvirga and Pontibacter genera. We found that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes were significantly correlated with soil pH and a low concentration of organic matter, suggesting that, in these relatively high-altitude desert soils, these two parameters may be of primary importance to influence bacterial community composition.

Background: Pediatric patients with pelvic solid tumors often receive multimodal treatment, but the long-term effects of this treatment on lower urinary tract (LUT) function are not well-described. This prospective cohort study (NCT05818462) investigates the effect of external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) on LUT function by comparing patient-reported outcome measures, non-invasive urodynamic studies, and post-void residuals (PVRs) amongst childhood cancer survivors (CCS).
Methods: All subjects were CCS greater than 1 year off-therapy for a pediatric solid tumor.

The world's largest continuous alpine permafrost layer on the Tibet Plateau (TP), is increasingly threatened by warming leading permafrost degradation that disrupts carbon, water, and nutrient cycling, and threatens ecosystem services and infrastructure stability. However, it remains unclear how permafrost sensitivity to warming varies across the TP and over time. By compiling a 20-year (2001-2020) dataset from 55 in situ monitoring sites, we find permafrost thawing rates increased from 45 ± 15 cm·10a (2001-2010) to 86 ± 30 cm·10a (2011-2020), while the temperature increasing rates at the top of permafrost rose from 0.

The Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) instrument, launched in April 2023, is North America's first geostationary air pollution monitoring satellite mission. Together with Asia's Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) launched in 2020 and Europe's upcoming Sentinel-4, TEMPO contributes to nearly global coverage provided by geostationary satellite constellation. TEMPO and GEMS offer hourly, high-resolution data of ozone surpassing the once-daily observations of instruments like the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) in temporal resolution.
