Article Abstract

Seawater flue gas desulfurization (SFGD) has shown great effectiveness in the controlling of sulfur dioxide (SO) emission and the removing of mercury (Hg) from flue gases of coal-fired power plants. Some problems pertaining to SFGD for Hg control, however, remain to be solved: (1) environmental impact from the discharge of Hg-containing seawater to the ocean, and (2) re-emission of gaseous Hg from the aeration tank to the atmosphere. This study synthesizes the copper/sulfur co-impregnated activated carbon (Cu-S-AC) to simultaneously capture aqueous Hg(II) and inhibit gaseous Hg re-emission from actual SFGD wastewater. Cu-S-AC exhibited greater Hg(II) adsorption than both raw activated carbon (AC) and sulfur-impregnated activated carbon (S-AC) at an initial Hg(II) concentration of higher than 8000 ng/L. The Hg(II) adsorption of Cu-S-AC was slightly greater at pH 7 and 8 than that under acidic conditions. The Hg(II) adsorption was well-fitted with both linear and Freundlich isotherms. The results of thermodynamic analyses veiled the endothermic and spontaneous adsorption of Hg(II) on Cu-S-AC. In addition, the pseudo-second-order equation provided the best correlation coefficient for the Hg(II) adsorption on Cu-S-AC. Notably, the increases of pH and temperature increased the Hg re-emission. Nevertheless, Cu-S-AC addition significantly inhibited the Hg re-emission (92%) from SFGD wastewater.

With mercury pollution causes serious threats to ecosystems and human health because of its extreme toxicity and bioaccumulation, the development of efficient removal technologies has become an urgent environmental priority. This study introduces a novel adsorbent thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole conjugated microporous polymer (TzTzCMP) for efficient Hg(II) removal from wastewater. TzTzCMP synthesized via condensation of dithiocarbamate and triformyl-phenol, exhibits a coral-like porous structure with a high specific surface area of 436.

Adsorption is a promising technique with significant potential for water purification. In this context, the present study examines the adsorption efficiency of poly(6-(ethoxybenzothiazole acrylamide) (PEBTA) in removing high-valent metal ions from aqueous environments, such as Th(IV), As(V), and Hg(II). Structural and chemical characterization of PEBTA is carried out by FT-IR, H-NMR, C-NMR, TGA, SEM, and EDAX.

Developing on-line hyphenated technique for the sensitive and accurate monitoring of heavy metal ions (HMs) is significant and interesting. In this connection, magnetic field-enhanced in-tube solid phase microextraction technique (ME/IT-SPME) was on-line hyphenated with HPLC system for the simultaneously quantitative analysis of Ni(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in various environmental samples. To enhance the ultraviolet sensitivity, the studied HMs were reacted with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate trihydrate (DDTC) to form HMs/DDTC complexes.

Lignin has attracted attention in water treatment due to its extensive sources, complex structure, environmental friendliness, and functionality. Mannich modification is an effective method for enhancing the lignin's active sites, but it typically requires high temperatures and long reaction times, which limits its scalability for practical application. This study presents a simple, one-step Mannich reaction at room temperature for synthesizing aminated lignin (NAL) with high yield and ultra-high nitrogen content (17.

This study theoretically investigates the potential of a polyacrylamide copolymerized with amylose, a primary component of starch, to evaluate its efficiency in removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater. This material concept seeks to combine the high adsorption capacity of polyacrylamide with the low cost and biodegradability of starch, ultimately aiming to offer an economical, efficient, and sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment. To this end, a computational model based on density functional theory (DFT) was developed, utilizing the B3LYP functional with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set, a widely recognized combination that strikes a balance between accuracy and computational cost.
