Driving under the influence of psychoactive substances is a major cause of motor vehicle crashes. The identification and quantification of substances most frequently involved in impaired-driving cases in a single analytic procedure could be an important asset in forensic toxicology. In this study, a highly sensitive and selective liquid chromatography (LC) approach hyphenated with Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was developed for the quantification of the main drugs present in the context of driving under the influence of drugs (DUID) using 100 μL of whole blood. This procedure involves a simple sample preparation and benefit from the selectivity brought by parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) allowing to solve most DUID cases using a single multi-analyte injection. The method was fully validated for the quantification of the major classes of psychoactive substances associated with impaired-driving (cannabinoids, cocaine and its metabolites, amphetamines, opiates and opioids, and the major benzodiazepines and z-drugs). The validation guidelines set by the "Société Française des Sciences et des Techniques Pharmaceutiques" (SFSTP) were respected for 22 psychoactive substances using 15 internal standards. Trueness was measured to be between 95.3 and 107.6% for all the tested concentrations. Precision represented by repeatability and intermediate precision was lower than 12% while recovery (RE) and matrix effect (ME) ranged from 49 to 105% and from -51 to 3%, respectively. The validated procedure provides an efficient approach for the simultaneous and simple quantification of the major drugs associated with impaired driving benefiting from the selectivity of PRM.

Biotic interactions-and predation in particular-are thought to follow a latitudinal gradient, increasing towards the tropics; yet empirical evidence remains contradictory and largely based on studies from the Northern Hemisphere. Moreover, the role of environmental variables shaping latitudinal gradients of predation intensity has seldom been tested. Here, we quantify predation by shell-breaking crabs on modern shells of the marine gastropod along a latitudinal gradient (40°-54° S) on the southwestern Atlantic coast.

The catastrophic Los Angeles Fires of January 2025 underscore the urgent need to understand the complex interplay between hydroclimatic variability and wildfire behavior. This study investigates how sequential wet and dry periods, hydroclimatic rebound events, create compounding environmental conditions that culminate in extreme fire events. Our results show that a cascade of moisture anomalies, from the atmosphere to vegetation health, precedes these fires by around 6-27 months.

In political studies, lobbying is portrayed as a vital process of political participation, contributing information, policy capacities, and political capital to policymaking, but also as a potential source of representation biases, undue influence, and policy capture. Given such Janus-faced nature of lobbying within democracy, the primary aim of this article is to investigate which perception prevails among citizens empirically. By analysing the primary data of two surveys of 4000 Canadian and 1600 Swiss citizens, it investigates the public perception of lobbying across countries with contrasting institutional and regulatory frameworks and different levels of trust in political institutions.

Purpose: Michigan Screening and Intervention for Glaucoma and Eye Health through Telemedicine Program (MI-SIGHT) was developed to facilitate access to glaucoma and eye disease screening and improve attendance at recommended follow-up in underserved communities. MI-SIGHT offered free eye disease screenings, low-cost glasses and for those who screened positive for glaucoma, personalized education, and language-concordant coaching grounded in motivational interviewing. Background: Passenger rail drivers' physical behaviors contribute to individual, organizational and community risks. As work tasks are theorized to determine physical behaviors performed during work hours, there is a need to clarify how work tasks determine passenger rail drivers' physical behaviors to inform improved work design.
Aims: The aim of this study was to describe the physical behaviors of passenger train drivers across their work tasks and breaks, and explore what potential influences create variations in physical behaviors within tasks.
