Article Abstract

The stability of the film poly(-butyl methacrylate) (PnBMA) with different tacticities, prepared on silicon oxide and exposed to aqueous phosphate-buffered saline with different concentrations of bovine serum albumin ( between 0 and 4.5 mg/mL), was examined at temperatures close to the physiological limit (between 4 and 37 °C) with optical microscopy, contact angle measurements, atomic force microscopy, and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. For PBS solutions with = 0, the stability of atactic PnBMA and dewetting of isotactic PnBMA was observed, caused by the interplay between the stabilizing long-range dispersion forces and the destabilizing short-range polar interactions. Analogous considerations of excess free energy cannot explain the retardation of dewetting observed for isotactic PnBMA in PBS solutions with higher . Instead, formation of a BSA overlayer, adsorbed preferentially but not exclusively to uncovered SiO regions, is evidenced and postulated to hinder polymer dewetting. Polymer dewetting and protein patterning are obtained in one step, suggesting a simple approach to fabricate biomaterials with micropatterned proteins.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a structurally simple, nontoxic, and water-soluble polymer widely utilized in medical and pharmaceutical applications. Notably, when a PEG chain is immersed in water, the surrounding water molecules play a key role in driving conformational changes of this macromolecule. In this study, we explore the solvation behavior of PEG under mechanical strain using molecular dynamics simulations, with an interatomic potential obtained from machine learning.

To investigate the microscopic mechanism of aging-induced "dewetting" at the matrix/filler interface in Nitrate Ester Plasticized Polyether (NEPE) propellant, this study decoupled the aging process into two factors: crosslinking density evolution and nitrate ester decomposition. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to construct all-component matrix models and matrix/filler interface models with varying aging extents. Key parameters including crosslinking density, mechanical properties, free volume fraction, diffusion coefficients of the matrix, as well as interfacial binding energy and radial distribution function (RDF) were calculated to analyze the effects of both aging factors on "debonding".

Ethnopharmacology Relevance: Sceletium tortuosum, also known as kanna, or kougoed, has long been an integral part of the traditional medicinal practices of the San and Khoikhoi peoples of Southern Africa. Among the various Sceletium species, S. tortuosum is used for its mood-enhancing properties, attributed to the structurally related mesembrine-type alkaloids found therein.

Polysorbates (PSs) are key excipients for the colloidal stability of biopharmaceuticals with unique properties. A comprehensive understanding of the physicochemical properties of these multicomponent products is essential to address potential stability issues without compromising their functionality. Here, we demonstrate that polysorbate 80 HP (PS80) shows an anomalous clouding, i.

The microphase separation in diblock copolymer films comprising two chemically similar methacrylate blocks, poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) and poly(tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate), is investigated. Four symmetric diblock copolymers, with M's ranging from 4300 to 109 700 g mol and narrow molecular weight distributions, are synthesized by group-transfer polymerization, are spin-coated from ethyl lactate solutions and are subsequently solvent vapor annealed. The two lower M copolymers dewet the silicon substrates after annealing, whereas the two higher M copolymers reveal the formation of holes and islands by optical microscopy, suggesting their microphase separation into lamellae structures orientated parallel to the substrate.
