The development of a biocomposite polymeric system for the antibacterial coating of polypropylene mesh materials for hernia repair is reported. Coatings were constituted by a film of chitosan containing randomly dispersed poly(d,l-lactide--glycolide) (PLGA) nanoparticles loaded with chlorhexidine or rifampicin. The chlorhexidine-loaded system exhibited a burst release during the first day reaching the release of the loaded drug in three or four days, whereas rifampicin was gradually released for at least 11 days. Both antibacterial coated meshes were highly active against and (10 CFU/mL), displaying zones of inhibition that lasted for 7 days (chlorhexidine) or 14 days (rifampicin). Apparently, both systems inhibited bacterial growth in the surrounding environment, as well as avoided bacterial adhesion to the mesh surface. These polymeric coatings loaded with biodegradable nanoparticles containing antimicrobials effectively precluded bacterial colonization of the biomaterial. Both biocomposites showed adequate performance and thus could have potential application in the design of antimicrobial coatings for the prophylactic coating of polypropylene materials for hernia repair.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) hold great potential as next-generation energy storage systems due to their high theoretical energy density and relatively low cost. However, their practical application is hindered by issues such as the shuttle phenomenon caused by soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), slow redox reaction rates, and unsatisfactory cycling stability. In this study, novel conjugated metal-organic frameworks, MM″(HHTP) (M, M″ = Ni, Co, Cu) is reported, as a functional coating on polypropylene (PP) separators.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are extensively researched for their high energy densities but are hindered by the lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling effect, which results in poor cyclability. A popular mitigation strategy is separator modification, where a LiPS trapping material is slurry-coated onto a conventional microporous polypropylene (PP) separator. This additional mass and volume unfortunately compromise the overall energy density of the LSB.

BackgroundThere is currently insufficient evidence to determine whether lightweight or heavyweight mesh is the better choice for ventral hernias. Recurrence and postoperative pain are associated with biomechanical responses such as inflammation, foreign body reaction, cell ingrowth, and tensile strength, which can be examined in animal studies. This study aimed to compare the biomechanical differences between light- and heavyweight meshes in animal models.

Controlled deposition of TiO nanoparticles onto polypropylene nonwoven fabrics was achieved by tuning electrostatic interactions through pH-dependent zeta potential adjustments. Oppositely charged fiber and particle surfaces promote effective adhesion, with surface coverage strongly impacted by the ionic composition of the dispersion medium. Centrifugal drying minimizes capillary-induced agglomeration, leading to more uniform coatings compared to passive evaporation.
