Surfaces that exhibit the reactivity of silica toward surface modification (silanol condensation) were prepared by treating thin films and particles of poly(methylsilsesquioxane) with aqueous potassium persulfate at elevated temperature. Parallel experiments were carried out using a highly cross-linked poly(dimethylsiloxane). Advancing (θ) and receding (θ) water contact angles for all of these oxidized surfaces were θ/θ = ∼10/∼0°, and these low values remain unchanged for months. Reactions of these silica-like surfaces with a range of functional silane reagents indicate that the surface silanol concentration is sufficient to prepare covalently attached monolayers of similar surface density to those prepared using silicon wafers as substrates.

Silica nanoparticles (SiONPs), as emerging foliar nanofertilizers, demonstrate promising potential in agriculture. However, whether foliar application of SiONPs alters belowground soil metabolites and microbe composition and abundance remains largely unknown. In this study, 3-week-old cucumber plants were foliar-sprayed with fumed or Stöber SiO NPs dosing at -4 mg of NPs per plant for 5 days.

The crystallization behavior of ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [BMIM] hexafluorophosphate [PF] and chloride [Cl] is investigated upon confinement in 2.3 or 8.2 nm diameter silica nanopore arrays, along with the effects of covalently modifying the pore walls with 1-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)3-methylimidazolium [TMS-MIM] groups.

Streptococcosis, caused by , is a significant disease in tilapia farming that results in substantial economic losses. While vaccination is the most effective method for prevention, current vaccines face challenges when administered orally or through immersion, primarily due to poor absorption and degradation in the fish's digestive system. Nanotechnology offers new ways to improve vaccine delivery and effectiveness.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in water poses a critical global challenge. A novel nanocomposite, montmorillonite (Mt)-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (Mt-nZVI), synthesized by liquid phase reduction, offers a promising method for effectively removing Cd. The material underwent characterization through various techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM).

Hypothesis: Gas hydrate formation in sediments is influenced by the availability of gas-water interfacial areas, which governs gas-water interactions. The surface wettability of sediment particles is expected to affect the spatial distribution of water within the pore space, thereby altering the extent of gas-liquid contact. Consequently, by tuning the wettability heterogeneity of the sediment, the spatial distribution of pore water can be regulated, which in turn influences the gas-water interactions and the kinetics of gas hydrate formation.
