The aim of this work was to explore the effect of lowering pH and application of surfactants (Brij 35, Tween 20 and Saponin) in increasing bioavailability and biodegradability of benzene and o-xylene (BX) as two hydrophobic VOCs in a liquid mixture. All experiments were conducted at neutral and acidic pH to evaluate the effect of population change from bacteria to fungi on the BX biodegradation. The experiments demonstrated that acclimating wastewater inoculum at pH 4 increased the fungal to bacterial ratio. An increase of 11% for benzene and 22% for o-xylene was observed at pH 4 unamended-culture as compared to pH 7. Brij 35 was chosen as the optimum surfactant which was favorable for enhancing the bioavailability of BX at pH 4. Fitting the experimental data to pseudo first-order biodegradation kinetics model showed the BX were biodegraded faster in the presence of optimum surfactant at pH 7 than pH 4.

In this study, a two-stage thermal desorption-gas chromatography (TTD-GC) method was established to determine eight benzene homologues (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, -xylene, -xylene, -xylene, styrene, and -butyltoluene) in airport ambient air and aircraft cabin air. By optimizing chromatographic conditions and two-stage thermal desorption parameters, detection sensitivity was significantly enhanced. The detection limits for the eight benzene homologues ranged from 41 ng m to 108 ng m, achieving sub-nanogram-level sensitivity, which enabled effective detection of low-concentration benzene homologues.

In this report, an ultrasonication and vacuum-assisted headspace solid-phase microextraction procedure followed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (UVA-HS-SPME-GC-FID) was proposed for direct extraction of solvent residuals, including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene, in pharmaceutical matrices. A novel robust, reliable and durable nanocomposite solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared by layer-by-layer coating of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-functionalized graphene on a stainless-steel wire. Then, the proposed fiber was used for headspace SPME and trapping of toluene as a residual solvent in solid penicillin, ampicillin and cefazolin vials followed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection.

Due to their hazardous effects on human health and air quality, benzene and xylene constitute the primary pollutants. Coupling the physicochemical strategies with bacterial bioremediation is an emerging mode of decontamination. Considering the limited understanding of benzene and xylene degradation pathways in the genus , failure of earlier documented bacteria to degrade these compounds due to poor optimization and complicated real-world contamination scenarios, we initiated the current project.

There is significant concern regarding the inventory of pollutants, with a particular focus on understanding the major sources of emissions and their impact on human health. The study investigated the indoor air quality of pollutants to which workers were exposed during different painting processes, including those employed in the automotive industry and those engaged in artistic painting. Sampling was conducted using Tenax-TA in one painting class and two printmaking classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Education in Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, as well as in a car painting repair shop in the city center of Bolu.

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) have been associated with certain cancers in the occupational population. This study aimed to investigate the associations between low-level ambient BTEX exposure and cancer risks in the general population. We leveraged data from the UK Biobank and included individuals free of cancer at 2006-2010 baseline.
