Background: Early weaning in yak calves is being attempted to improve yak reproduction rate. However, this has to be done with caution because of the high mortality rate of calves due to the lack of nutrients and the harsh environmental conditions. Twenty-four weaned male yak calves were used in a 60 day feeding trial in which astragalus root extract (ARE) was supplemented. They were assigned randomly to one of four dietary treatments (n = six per treatment) that differed in ARE level: 0 g kg (control), ARE ; 20 g kg , ARE ; 50 g kg , ARE and 80 g kg dry matter intake (DMI), ARE .
Results: Final bodyweight and average daily gain (ADG) were significantly higher and the DMI/ADG ratio was significantly lower in calves with ARE supplementation than control (ARE ) calves. Ruminal concentrations of acetate and propionate and serum concentration of superoxide dismutase in ARE calves were higher than in the other groups and serum concentration of insulin was higher in ARE calves than in ARE calves. Serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) concentrations in ARE-fed calves were higher than in controls. Serum tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) concentration was higher in ARE and ARE groups than ARE calves and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration was higher in ARE than in ARE calves. Serum immunoglobulin A (IgA), IgG and immunoglobulin M (IgM) concentrations increased with age in ARE-fed calves. ARE supplementation increased the abundance of fiber degrading bacteria.
Conclusion: ARE at a dosage of 5% to 8% DMI can be supplemented to early weaned yak calves to improve growth performance, antioxidant capacity and immunity. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

The aim of this study was to investigate three unrelated Simmental calves with atypical white coat color, identify potential genetic causes using a trio-based whole-genome sequencing approach, and assess the prevalence of the identified variants in the breed. Several inherited alleles affecting coat color, ranging from fawn to red spotted and white-headed, have been described in Simmental cattle originating from Switzerland. However, no genetic variant has yet been associated with an almost completely white coat in this breed.

Systematic characterization of the molecular states of cells in livestock tissues is essential for understanding the cellular and genetic mechanisms underlying economically and ecologically important physiological traits. Here, as part of the Farm Animal Genotype-Tissue Expression (FarmGTEx) project, we describe a comprehensive reference map including 1,793,854 cells from 59 bovine tissues in calves and adult cattle, spanning both sexes, which reveals intra-tissue and inter-tissue cellular heterogeneity in gene expression, transcription factor regulation and intercellular communication. Integrative analysis with genetic variants that underpin bovine monogenic and complex traits uncovers cell types of relevance, such as spermatocytes, responsible for sperm motility and excitatory neurons for milk fat yield.

Methods: The study analyzed reproductive records and SNP data from Japanese Black cattle born between 2001 and 2005, resulting in 8,553 records from large farms. Genomic inbreeding was assessed using SNP data from 782 animals.

Known commonly as the brown stomach worm, it is ingested by grazing cattle where it then progresses its life stages, occupying the host abomasum and then the intestine, causing illness.
