Quantum-Size Effect Induced Andreev Bound States in Ultrathin Metallic Islands Proximitized by a Superconductor.

Phys Rev Lett

August 2025

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsung-Dao Lee Institute, Key Laboratory of Artificial Structures and Quantum Control (Ministry of Education), School of Physics and Astronomy, Shanghai 200240, China.

While Andreev bound states (ABSs) have been realized in engineered superconducting junctions, their direct observation in normal metal-superconductor heterostructures-enabled by quantum confinement-remains experimentally elusive. Here, we report the detection of ABSs in ultrathin metallic islands (Bi, Ag, and SnTe) grown on the s-wave superconductor NbN. Using high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we clearly reveal in-gap ABSs with energies symmetric about the Fermi level.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a well-established near-infrared dye which has been used clinically for several decades. Recently, it has been utilised for fluorescence-guided surgery in a range of solid cancer types, including sarcoma, with the aim of reducing the positive margin rate. The increased uptake and retention of ICG within tumours, compared with normal tissue, gives surgeons a visual reference to aid resection when viewed through a near-infrared camera.

Tender x-ray microfocus beamline employing a combined double crystal/multilayer grating monochromator.

Rev Sci Instrum

September 2025

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie (HZB), Albert-Einstein-Str. 15, 12489 Berlin, Germany.

A new x-ray beamline at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt laboratory at BESSY II provides monochromatized radiation in the energy range from 1 to 10 keV, with a typical focus size of 20 μm. It is not only optimized for high-resolution x-ray spectrometry and microscopy but also enables scattering experiments and radiometric measurements. The innovative monochromator consists of a plane grating monochromator module equipped with multilayer-coated blazed gratings for x-ray energies up to 4 keV and an integrated double-crystal monochromator module equipped with silicon (111) crystals for x-ray energies ranging from 2.

Membrane-protein quality control in Escherichia coli involves coordinated actions of the AAA+ protease FtsH, the insertase YidC and the regulatory complex HflKC. These systems maintain proteostasis by facilitating membrane-protein insertion, folding and degradation. To gain structural insights into a putative complex formed by FtsH and YidC, we performed single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy on detergent-solubilized membrane samples, from which FtsH and YidC were purified using Ni-NTA affinity and size-exclusion chromatography.

The surface structure of an electrocatalyst plays a crucial role in determining the activity. As a model system, gold has been widely investigated as an electro-oxidation catalyst, although there has been much less research on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the potential region of gold oxidation. Here, we combine voltammetric scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), at different spatial and angular resolutions, respectively, to correlate the local crystallographic structure of polycrystalline goldfocusing on grains close to (113), (011), (114), and (111) orientationswith the electrocatalytic behavior for the OER.
