Chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) instruments routinely detect hundreds of oxidized organic compounds in the atmosphere. A major limitation of these instruments is the uncertainty in their sensitivity to many of the detected ions. We describe the development of a new high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer that operates in one of two ionization modes: using either ammonium ion ligand-switching reactions such as for CIMS or proton transfer reactions such as for protontransfer-reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS). Switching between the modes can be done within 2min. The CIMS mode of the new instrument has sensitivities of up to 67 000 dcps ppbv (duty-cycle-corrected ion counts per second per part per billion by volume) and detection limits between 1 and 60 pptv at 2 for a 1 s integration time for numerous oxygenated volatile organic compounds. We present a mass spectrometric voltage scanning procedure based on collision-induced dissociation that allows us to determine the stability of ammonium-organic ions detected by the CIMS instrument. Using this procedure, we can effectively constrain the sensitivity of the ammonia chemical ionization mass spectrometer to a wide range of detected oxidized volatile organic compounds for which no calibration standards exist. We demonstrate the application of this procedure by quantifying the composition of secondary organic aerosols in a series of laboratory experiments.

A rapid and specific liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method with a wide linear range was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of Vitamin K1 (VK1) trans- and cis- isomers in human plasma. Bovine serum albumin solution (15%) served as a surrogate matrix for preparing the calibrators to establish the quantitative curves. After liquid-liquid extraction, VK1 trans- and cis- isomers in plasma samples were separated on a ChromCore C30 column (15 cm × 4.

This study evaluates ammonia gas recovery from high-strength anaerobic digestate using a bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPED) and membrane contactor (MC). Ammonia is a promising carbon-neutral energy carrier, while digestates present both environmental challenges and opportunities for ammonia recovery. The BPED was tested at 2,000---10,000 mg-N/L under varying voltages and flow rates, achieving up to 87.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a class of organic salts with melting points below 100°C. Owing to their unique chemical and physical properties, they are used as solvents and catalysts in various chemical transformations, progressively replacing common volatile organic solvents (VOCs) in green synthetic applications. However, their intrinsic ionic nature can restrict the use of mass spectrometric techniques to monitor the time progress of a reaction occurring in an IL medium, thus preventing one from following the formation of the reaction products or intercepting the reaction intermediates.

Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaf is rich in chlorogenic acid, which has antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory activities. In this work, a new and green strategy for functional hyper-crosslinked adsorption resin based on Friedel-Crafts reaction of pendant vinyl groups in divinylbenzene with anhydrous ethanol and acrylamide grafting polymerization was developed, and the obtained HCREt-AM resin had excellent performance on chlorogenic acid separation from Eucommia ulmoides Oliver leaf extract. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics study showed the adsorption process fitted by Langmuir adsorption isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation.

Deciphering the multicomponent of cell membranes at the single-cell level is critical for understanding pathological mechanisms such as tumor metastasis, yet remains technically daunting due to the membrane's nanoscale thickness and ultralow molecular abundance. Here, we introduce a surface-assisted vacuum ultraviolet laser desorption-ionization mass spectrometry imaging (SAVUVDI-MSI) platform that overcomes long-standing challenges of cytoplasmic interference and insufficient sensitivity. Leveraging the nanoscale depth profiling capability of VUV-LDI, we achieve precise ablation of a single-cell membrane.
