Objectives: Air medical services evacuation of patients with viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) is a complex process. The United States National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center held an in-person tabletop exercise (TTX) in June 2023 to review and evaluate global processes and plans for long-range VHF air transportation capabilities. The TTX sought to test the coordination, prioritization, capacities, and plans for using VHF transportation capabilities when multiple countries simultaneously request support in air medical services evacuation of their sick or exposed citizens to a high-level isolation unit in their country for care.

Findings from a disease prioritization and tabletop exercise to evaluate transboundary One Health capacities between Jordan and Iraq.

BMC Glob Public Health

July 2025

Department of Environmental Health and Engineering, Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, USA.

Background: The One Health Systems Transboundary Assessment for Priority Zoonoses (OHTAPZ) tool was developed to address the need for a multisectoral approach in assessing transboundary zoonotic disease threats within and across shared land borders. This study sought to implement recommendations from the tool's initial pilot and revise it for further application.

Methods: This revised methodology included an expanded stakeholder identification process in Phase 1, an interactive tabletop exercise for assessment in Phase 2, and a partner-led strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis in Phase 3.

Micro-controlled lower limb prosthetic devices typically employ onboard sensors on the amputated side of the user's body to generate control patterns. However, balanced ambulation in a healthy subject requires synchronized neural control to facilitate appropriate positioning and orientation of both limbs. Building upon this idea, this study introduces a control architecture that utilizes information acquired from both limbs using only two inertial measurement units (one placed on the left shank, and one placed on the right thigh) to generate the control commands for a transtibial prosthesis prototype clamped to a table-top.

Background: Emergency preparedness exercises are essential in building a resilient public health system that can support increasingly frequent and complex public health risks. This rapid review describes evidence-informed practices or principles that can enhance all-hazards emergency preparedness exercises, with a specific focus on the public health agency context.

Methods: Four databases were systematically searched, including MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, and CINAHL (January 2013-June 2024) and complemented with a grey literature search.

Teaching mass casualty incident management to senior medical students by three-dimensional tabletop exercise without lecture.

BMC Med Educ

June 2025

Department of Emergency Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, No.7, Chung Shan S. Rd. (Zhongshan S. Rd.), Zhongzheng Dist., Taipei City, 100225, Taiwan, Republic of China.

Background: Traditional methods of teaching mass casualty incident (MCI) management often lack engagement, particularly for senior medical students. Lectures may be uninspiring, and tabletop exercises (TTX) may not fully captivate participants. This study proposes the use of three-dimensional (3D) models in TTX as a solution to these challenges.
