The potential of erythritol as a platform chemical in biomass refinery is discussed in terms of erythritol production and utilization. Regarding erythritol production, fermentation of sugar or starch has been already commercialized. The shift of the carbon source from glucose to inexpensive inedible waste glycerol is being investigated, which will decrease the price of erythritol. The carbon-based yield of erythritol from glycerol is comparable to or even higher than that from glucose. The metabolic pathway of erythritol biosynthesis has become clarified: erythrose-4-phosphate, which is one of the intermediates in the pentose phosphate pathway, is dephosphorylated and reduced to erythritol. The information about the metabolic pathway may give insights to improve the productivity by bleeding. Regarding erythritol utilization, chemical conversions of erythritol, especially deoxygenation, have been investigated in these days. Erythritol is easily dehydrated to 1,4-anhydroerythritol, which can be also used as the substrate for production of useful C4 chemicals. C-O hydrogenolysis and deoxydehydration using heterogeneous catalysts are effective reactions for erythritol/1,4-anhydroerythritol conversion.

Background And Objectives: Consumption of low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCSs) has been associated with adverse health outcomes. However, little is known about the association between consumption of LNCSs and cognition. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between consumption of LNCSs and cognitive decline.

Monk fruit extract (, MFE) is a natural, non-caloric sweetener known for its intense sweetness, antioxidant properties, and potential metabolic health benefits. While certain aqueous monk fruit decoctions are recognised as non-novel foods in the UK and Ireland due to significant pre-1997 consumption, the European Union (EU) has adopted a more cautious approach under the Novel Food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. As of October 2024, only one specific aqueous extract of monk fruit has been authorised in the EU under Regulation (EU) 2024/2345, permitting its use in several food categories.

Zinc (Zn) anode shows great potential for aqueous zinc-ion batteries yet faces persistent issues of dendritic growth and parasitic reactions at the interface. Here, six polyol additives with different hydroxylated carbon chain lengths are systematically studied under standardized conditions as interfacial regulators for optimizing Zn plating behavior. The calculations coupled with experimental analyses reveal a critical chain-length dependence: short-chain polyols prioritize Zn migration and desolvation but insufficiently protect the interface, whereas long-chain polyols lead to excessive kinetic barriers despite effective interfacial stabilization.

Investigating structural and hydroxyl group effects in electrooxidation of alcohols to value-added products by solid-acid electrocatalysts is essential for upgrading biomass alcohols. Herein, we report efficient electrocatalytic oxidations of saturated alcohols (C-C) to selectively form formate using NiCo hydroxide (NiCo-OH) derived NiCoO solid-acid electrocatalysts with balanced Lewis acid (LASs) and Brønsted acid sites (BASs). Thermal treatment transforms BASs-rich (89.

Gel-based tissue clearing technologies represent a significant advancement in three-dimensional imaging. However, the challenge of achieving consistent high resolution across large tissue samples remains an issue. We present a phase-separated eutectogel constructed through radical copolymerization of acrylamide and ,-dimethylacrylamide in a eutectic solvent (antipyrine/erythritol/imidazole) (AEI/ES) with dynamically tunable polymer-solvent interactions.
