Article Abstract

High-energy narrowband terahertz (THz) pulses, relevant for a plethora of applications, can be created from the interference of two chirped-pulse drive lasers. The presence of third order dispersion, an intrinsic feature of many high-energy drive lasers, however, can significantly reduce the optical-to-THz conversion efficiency and have other undesired effects. Here, we present a detailed description of the effect of third-order dispersion (TOD) in the pump pulse on the generation of THz radiation via phase-matching of broadband highly chirped pulse trains. Although the analysis is general, we focus specifically on parameters typical to a Ti:Sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system for quasi-phase-matching in periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN) in the range of THz frequencies around 0.5 THz. Our analysis provides the tools to optimize the THz generation process for applications requiring high energy and to control it to produce desired THz waveforms in a variety of scenarios.

A computational protocol is developed to evaluate the second- and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of donor-acceptor benzene derivatives, incorporating ab initio electron correlation, frequency dispersion, and solvent effects, with the aim of achieving high predictive accuracy. The computational scheme encompasses (i) high-level CCSD(T) calculations of the static first (β) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities, (ii) the assessment of the performance of the CAM-B3LYP and M06-2X exchange-correlation DFT functionals to evaluate β and γ values, (iii) the use, after assessment of its effectiveness, of the multiplicative scheme to evaluate second harmonic generation responses, (iv) the evaluation of the frequency dispersion factors on β and γ by using Bishop's frequency-dispersion polynomials, and their use, in combination with the multiplicative correction scheme, to evaluate third harmonic generation second hyperpolarizabilities. This hybrid approach is shown to closely reproduce the experimental trends, although systematic quantitative deviations still remain with respect to experimental values.

In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was synthesized via a modified low-temperature Hummer's method and incorporated into a poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix to fabricate PEO/GO nanocomposite thin films using a casting technique. This work explores how GO incorporation affects the structural and optical properties of PEO, with emphasis on its suitability for optical switching and other optoelectronic applications. The films were prepared with varying GO concentrations and characterized using XRD, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and other standard techniques.

We demonstrate a compact source of few-cycle pulses at 1.56 µm wavelength on the basis of single- and double-stage erbium fiber schemes of nonlinear pulse amplification with large-mode area (LMA) solid- and hollow-core fiber compressors. The source is designed according to the concept of self-phase modulation-induced spectrum broadening in normal-dispersion erbium-doped fiber (EDF) followed by ultra-broadband pulse compression in passive LMA fibers with negative second-order dispersion and low nonlinearity.

The UV transparent nonlinear optical crystals of undoped and Rb doped ammonium pentaborate tetrahydrate have been grown by slow evaporation technique at 32 °C. Presence of dopants in the crystal lattice is confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and by the reduced intensity of NH stretching vibrations in the Raman spectrum. Enlargement of the unit cell of Rb doped crystal is in correlation with the size of the dopant.

The residual third-order dispersion (TOD) in ultrafast laser systems must be compensated. We developed an initial design method for a low-oscillation TOD mirror (TODM). The optimized TODM provided a TOD of -5000 fs with oscillations less than ±50 fs in a wavelength range of 890-960 nm.
