Article Abstract

From December 2016 to December 2017, the concentrations of the benzene series (benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethyl-benzene) in air were analyzed in 223 residential buildings in five climatic regions of China during different seasons. The arithmetic average concentrations of benzene, toluene, xylene, and ethyl-benzene were 6.78, 17.4, 17.68, and 9.87 μg·m, respectively. Indoor benzene series concentrations in China were slightly higher than that in other countries; the standard limits for indoor benzene series concentrations in China are much higher than those of other countries and organizations. Among the many factors affecting the concentration of the benzene series in the rooms, the relationship between the completion time of decoration, smoking, and cooking frequency and the concentration of benzene homologues was studied. The results showed that the concentration of toluene decreased with the prolongation of decoration time, the concentration of benzene in smoking households was higher than that in non-smoking families, and there was no direct correlation between cooking frequency and indoor concentration of the benzene series. The study provides statistical data on exposure to the benzene series in decorated homes and a discussion of setting values of relevant standards.

Two series of robust pillared metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are obtained under solvothermal conditions by combining a metal salt with either Hbpdc, biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid, or Hpda, 1,4-phenylenediacrylic acid, forming 2D layers, which are pillared by L, an alloxazine derivative of 1,4-di(pyridin-4-yl)benzene using a one-pot three-component strategy. Crystallographic studies reveal the formation of two isomorphous series of compounds, namely 1-M (from Hbpdc with M = Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and 2-M (from Hpda with M = Co or Cu). The multifunctional compounds have high decomposition temperatures, and their sorption properties were measured, revealing relatively low surface areas.

Aqueous batteries have become a prospective future energy storage system because of their low coefficient of cost and stability. However, their lower energy density limits their applications. Ammonium ions (NH) have a small hydration radius and light molar mass, and aqueous ammonium ion batteries (AAIBs) are anticipated for solving the inherent low-energy density problem of aqueous batteries.

A series of 2-substituted 4H-chromen-4-ones 3a-3h containing triphenylamine or N-phenylcarbazole on the benzene ring were synthesized for the first time via the Suzuki coupling reaction. The photophysical properties of the compounds and their relationship to the structure of the compounds were investigated by methods such as spectroscopic analysis, single-crystal analysis, and theoretical calculations. The systematic results indicate that compounds 3a-3h have intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), aggregation-induced emission (AIE), and dual-state emission (DSE) effects with a wide range of fluorescence emission wavelengths (421-618 nm), showing the potential to be developed into a full-color fluorophore.

Mechanochemical reduction of β-diketiminate (BDI) barium iodide precursors with K/KI resulted in the first barium inverse sandwich complexes containing the benzene dianion in yields of up to 54%. This most challenging isolation of highly reactive (BDI)Ba-(CH)-Ba(BDI) complexes, completes the family of heavier benzene inverse sandwich complexes and allows for a comparison of trends in the series from Mg, Ca, Sr to Ba. Syntheses, stabilities, structures, electronic states and reactivities of the full range are compared.

Compounds that possess a benzene sulfonamide structure are utilized in a wide range of fields. Benzene bissulfonamides are also important compounds in the field of organic and medicinal chemistry. Based on these features, a series of benzene bissulfonamides were synthesized in moderate yields starting from 3-methylanisole.
