Planetary bodies like Mars, Europa, and Enceladus pose the question, "How to study them without contaminating them and destroying future prospects to detect life, if it is there?" The natural trade-off, of course, is that the cleaner your spacecraft, the more you can explore such a body without risk of contaminating it. As chartered by NASA Headquarters, the Planetary Protection Technology Definition Team (PPTDT) was asked to provide a report covering six different areas related to the engineering and technology challenges of implementing planetary protection requirements on solar system exploration missions.

Freezing point depression due to high salt concentration is crucial for liquid water to exist on cold worlds, expanding special regions where habitats are plausible. Determination of the growth tolerances of terrestrial microbes in analog systems impacts planetary protection protocols aimed at preventing interference with life detection missions or potential native ecosystems on celestial bodies. We measured the salinity tolerances of 18 salinotolerant bacteria (Bacillus, Halomonas, Marinococcus, Nesterenkonia, Planococcus, Salibacillus, and Terribacillus).

The planetary health diet (PHD) proposed by the EAT-Lancet Commission, advocates for reduced meat and dairy intake while emphasizing the consumption of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Existing studies have shown that the PHD can lower mortality rates and slow cognitive decline in various populations. However, its specific effects on cognitive impairment among elderly individuals in China remain unclear, primarily due to regional socioeconomic and cultural differences.

The streams of Alaska's Brooks Range lie within a vast (~14M ha) tract of protected wilderness and have long supported both resident and anadromous fish. However, dozens of historically clear streams have recently turned orange and turbid. Thawing permafrost is thought to have exposed sulfide minerals to weathering, delivering iron and other potentially toxic metals to aquatic ecosystems.

Introduction: Microorganisms can have major impacts on the success of NASA's missions, including the integrity of materials, the protection of extraterrestrial environments, the reliability of scientific results, and maintenance of crew health. Robust cleaning and sterilization protocols for spacecraft and associated environments are currently in place in NASA facilities, but microbial contamination should be further controlled and its impact on NASA's missions and science must be minimized. To address this, air and surfaces across cleanrooms and uncontrolled spaces at the Marshall Space Flight Center were sampled and microbial burden and diversity were analyzed.

Noise pollution is a planetary health problem. This perspective article sets out to provide a high-level summary of recent scientific evidence on the impacts of noise pollution from transport on human and the natural environment. Beyond annoyance and sleep disturbance, evidence has indicated that traffic noise is associated with cardiovascular diseases, metabolic outcomes, mental health and neurological health.
