Article Abstract

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus in the family Togaviridae, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Of three known CHIKV genotypes, the Asian genotype was introduced into the Caribbean islands and rapidly spread throughout Central and South Americas. We previously found patients with symptoms compatible with chikungunya fever in 2014-2015 in Aruba, a Caribbean island of 180 km. We here describe the full genome sequences of eight CHIKV strains isolated from patient sera of the Aruban outbreak. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that two closely related but distinct lineages of Asian-genotype CHIKV circulated simultaneously during the epidemic in 2014-2015. These results suggested that CHIKV was introduced into Aruba more than once in a short period, reflecting the importance of Aruba as a travel hub within the region.

Four Gram-stain-negative, strictly aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive bacterial strains, designated 2201CG5-10, 2201CG14-23, 2201CG1-2-11, and 2304DJ70-9 were isolated from marine sponges collected in the Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequences revealed that these strains represent a distinct phyletic lineage within the genus Aquimarina. Based on the whole-genome sequence comparisons, the closest phylogenetic relatives of the four novel strains were Aquimarina latercula DSM 2041, Aquimarina pacifica SW150, and Aquimarina mytili PSC33, which shared average nucleotide identity values below 81.

Hematopoietic multipotent progenitors (MPPs) regulate blood cell production to meet the evolving demands of an organism. Adult human MPPs remain ill defined, whereas mouse MPPs are well characterized, with distinct immunophenotypes and lineage potencies. Unlabelled: Ongoing viral evolution in immunocompromised individuals with persistent infection may facilitate the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and emergence of variants of concern (VOC). This study was conducted in the Western Cape Province of South Africa where the HIV prevalence is around 8%, with limited information on the frequency of persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection, the pattern of evolution in these individuals, and if these variants contribute to the diversity of circulating viruses. Colonization history of snow algae on Hawai'i Island.

Red-pigmented snow algae are cold-adapted (including cryophilic) photosynthetic microbes commonly found in polar and alpine snowpacks worldwide, but their dispersal across isolated cryospheres remains poorly understood. We report the occurrence of snow algae on Maunakea, Hawai'i, the most isolated cryosphere in the world, during an unusually prolonged summer snow retention event in 2023 associated with La Niña conditions. Red-pigmented algal cells were observed in snow samples collected during this event.
