Article Abstract

The Netherlands is characterized by highly variable land use within a small area, and a strong influence of the North Sea on national climate. Devoid of significant topography, it is an excellent location for assessing the relative influence of various factors on fog occurrence in the absence of terrain effects. Using observations from a dense network of weather stations throughout the country, the climatology of fog in the Netherlands is assessed over a period of 45 years. On a national scale, interannual variability is linked to changes in synoptic pressure-gradient forcing. Within the country, a comprehensive in-depth analysis of regional differences between fog occurrence is made, together with an assessment of local physical factors which could bias fog formation in one location over another. Regional variability is shown to be strongly related to the mesoscale influences of urbanization and the North Sea. In fact, some locations experience over twice as much fog as others. From this finding, a simple index is presented, which combines the water and urban fraction surrounding a station. This "Regionally Weighted Index" () is able to accurately sort the stations according to their relative fogginess. Its practical use is encouraged for assessing a given site's climatological favourability, even when meteorological observations are unavailable.

Background: Following completion of the VICTORIA trial, vericiguat was approved for the treatment of worsening heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and received a class IIb recommendation in European and North American guidelines. The subsequent VICTOR trial evaluated the use of vericiguat in patients with HFrEF and no recent worsening. We aimed to assess the effect of vericiguat on clinical endpoints through pooled analyses of patient-level data from the VICTORIA and VICTOR trials.

Freezing of gait (FoG) impairs mobility and daily functioning and increases the risk of falls, leading to a reduced quality of life (QoL) in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). The Cue2walk, a wearable smart cueing device, can detect FoG and hereupon provides rhythmic cues to help people with PD manage FoG in daily life. This study investigated the user experiences and device usage of the Cue2walk, and its impact on health-related QoL, FoG and daily activities.

Oil and Water Recovery from Palm Oil Mill Effluent: A Comparative Study of PVDF and α-AlO Ultrafiltration Membranes.

Membranes (Basel)

June 2025

Sanitary Engineering Section, Department of Water Management, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, Delft University of Technology, 2628 CN Delft, The Netherlands.

Recovering oil and water from palm oil mill effluent reduces environmental pollution and promotes sustainable practices. An effective method to achieve this is ultrafiltration (UF), which uses semi-permeable membranes to separate oil, solids, and other contaminants from wastewater under pressure. To assess the most effective recovery method, an experimental comparison was conducted between PVDF and α-AlO UF membranes at constant permeate of 20-50 LMH for PVDF and 20-70 LMH for α-AlO membranes.

Response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in metastatic melanoma (MM) varies among patients, and current baseline biomarkers predicting treatment outcomes are limited. As mitochondrial (MT) metabolism has emerged as an important regulator of host immune function, we explored the association of host MT genetics (MT haplogroups) with ICI efficacy in 1,225 ICI-treated patients with MM from the clinical trial CheckMate-067 and the International Germline Immuno-Oncology Melanoma Consortium. We discovered and validated significant associations of MT haplogroup T (HG-T) with resistance to anti-programmed cell death protein-1-based ICI (both single-agent and combination) and have shown that HG-T is independent from established tumor predictors.

Amlenetug (Lu AF82422) is a human monoclonal antibody targeting α-synuclein in clinical development for multiple system atrophy. We describe a series of studies that characterize its functional properties and supported its selection as a viable clinical candidate. Amlenetug inhibits seeding induced in mouse primary neurons by various α-synuclein fibrillar assemblies and by aggregates isolated from MSA brain homogenate.
