Article Abstract

An approach for dual-comb spectroscopy using electro-optic (EO) phase modulation is reported. Maximum-length pseudo-random binary sequences allow for energy-efficient and flexible comb generation. Self-correction of interferograms is shown to remove relative comb drifts and improve mutual coherence, even for EO combs derived from the same laser source. Methane spectroscopy is reported over a ∼10  GHz spectral range, limited by the modulators' bandwidth. The potential of a simple EO comb instrument is demonstrated to rapidly quantify atmospheric methane emissions with ppb precision over 1 km.

Fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOGs) are widespread sensors used in different fields, such as inertial sensing, navigation, positioning systems, and seismology. In particular, for applications where high bandwidth and dynamic range are necessary, such as rotational seismology, FOGs are used in closed-loop configuration. Here, we show a novel closed-loop FOG based on a dual feedback configuration.

We present and demonstrate what we believe to be a novel approach to realizing controllable microwave pulse generation based on an actively mode-locked optoelectronic oscillator (AML-OEO) employing an electro-optic dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). One radio-frequency (RF) port of the DDMZM is utilized to achieve feedback of the microwave pulse signal self-oscillated from the AML-OEO cavity, and the other RF port of the DDMZM is injected by an external low-frequency signal to realize mode locking. Through adjusting the direct-current (DC) bias voltage applied to the DDMZM, the gain distribution curve of the AML-OEO cavity varies accordingly, leading to the generation of microwave pulse trains with switchable repetition rates or definable pulse positions.

Integrated electro-optic (EO) frequency combs are pivotal components in a wide range of applications, including optical communications, spectroscopy, optical computing, precision timing, and frequency measurement. Although broadband on-chip EO combs are typically generated within resonators possessing high-quality factors, their relatively low conversion efficiency remains a significant constraint. By comparison, EO combs produced in dual rings exhibit enhanced conversion efficiencies, which generally necessitate satisfying a generalized critical coupling condition.

Integrated electro-optic modulators with large bandwidth, high linearity and low driving voltage are key building blocks for integrated microwave photonic (IMWP) links to transmit broadband signals with high fidelity. In this work, thin-film lithium niobate electro-optic modulator consisting of a thermo-optic reconfigurable coupler and dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulation scheme is proposed and demonstrated to achieve spurious-free dynamic range of 112.87/107.

The electro-optic frequency comb (EOFC) has significant applications in fields such as spectroscopy, optical communications, high-precision measurements, and quantum technology, offering a flexible free spectral range (FSR) and stable spectral characteristics. Practical implementation of the EOFC requires high power and flattened comb teeth, which depend highly on optical losses and microwave modulation strength. In this work, we propose the integration of short-circuit electrodes to form a microwave resonant cavity, thereby enhancing the microwave modulation strength.
