Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and aliphatic hydrocarbons (AHs), including petroleum biomarkers, were studied in four sediment cores collected around Deception and Penguin Islands, Antarctica. Total PAHs in Deception Island (DCP) samples ranged from 2.0 to 26.8 ng g, and in Penguin Island (PGI) varied between 13.2 and 60.3 ng g. Multiple sources of PAHs were verified in DCP, with petrogenic-derived compounds being predominant over the last 10 years. In PGI, PAHs related to natural contributions from the erosion of coal deposits were reported. Total AHs in DCP ranged from 4.5 to 19 μg g and in PGI varied between 5.3 and 21.9 μg g. In DCP, the n-alkanes distribution pattern showed the presence of petroleum residues in the top sections and both terpanes and hopanes were detected, related to the use of fossil fuels for power generation and in different types of vessels. In PGI, the main source of n-alkanes was marine inputs and only terpanes were detected. The slight increase in hydrocarbon levels observed from 1980 onward in DCP was assumed to be due to the development of tourism in the region and to the scientific station activities. In PGI, anthropogenic-related hydrocarbons were detected in the recent sections and were linked to the development of tourism near the island, scientific activities and the increase in vessel traffic. In general, the concentrations of hydrocarbons found around both islands were comparable to those found in uncontaminated Antarctic regions.

This study aimed to evaluate the presence of emerging pollutants [perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA)] in chinstrap penguins () and krill () from Deception Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) to provide data on the occurrence of emerging pollutants in Antarctica. For this purpose, thirty-four samples were studied, including four samples of adult tissue and six samples of chick tissue, as well as krill samples from the area. The selected samples were subjected to extraction processes and subsequent analytical determination of perfluorooctane sulfonate, perfluorooctanoic acid, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and BPA using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in chinstrap penguins () and krill () from Deception Island (South Shetland Islands, Antarctica) to provide additional data of the PCB presence in Antarctica. To this end, 34 samples of different tissues corresponding to four adult specimens and six chicks, and krill from the area were studied. The selected samples were analyzed for the determination of 27 congeners of PCBs by gas chromatography.

Cu is a vital micronutrient, but free Cu ions (Cu) in seawater, even at subnanomolar concentrations, can impede phytoplankton growth. Natural Cu complexation with organic ligands regulates Cu acquisition and, in most instances, reduces Cu concentrations below toxic thresholds. Along the Antarctic coast, the sources and sinks of Cu and its associated ligands remain poorly defined.

Polar freshwater ecosystems are characterized by a distinct microbiota. However, little is known about viral diversity and abundance, especially regarding the ecology of RNA viruses. We used shotgun metagenomic analysis on samples from Antarctic ecosystems, and report here the characterization of the virome fraction, from different lakes located in the South Shetland Islands (Penguin, Ardley, Deception and King George Island) in the Peninsula Antarctica, in the summer season 2020.
