The relevance of microalgae biotechnology for producing high-value compounds with biomedical application, such as polysaccharides, has been increasing. Despite this, the knowledge about the composition and structure of microalgae polysaccharides is still scarce. In this work, water-soluble polysaccharides from Nannochloropsis oculata were extracted, fractionated, structurally analysed, and subsequently tested in terms of immunostimulatory activity. A combination of sugar and methylation analysis with interaction data of carbohydrate-binding proteins using carbohydrate microarrays disclosed the complex structural features of the different polysaccharides. These analyses showed that the water-soluble polysaccharides fractions from N. oculata were rich in (β1→3, β1→4)-glucans, (α1→3)-, (α1→4)-mannans, and anionic sulphated heterorhamnans. The immunostimulatory assay highlighted that these fractions could also stimulate murine B-lymphocytes. Thus, the N. oculata water-soluble polysaccharides show potential to be further explored for immune-mediated biomedical applications.

Objective: To evaluate whether pretreatment strategies targeting the extracellular matrix (ECM), such as DNase I and low-frequency ultrasound, enhance the efficacy of successive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against Candida albicans biofilms and to assess the effects on biofilm components.
Methods: Forty-eight-hour C. albicans (ATCC 90028) biofilms were treated under four conditions: (I) aPDT [Photodithazine (PDZ) (25 mg/L) for 20 min + Light-Emitting Diode (LED) (660 nm, 18 J/cm²)], (II) DNase+aPDT [5 min with 20 U/mL DNase I before aPDT], (III) sonication+aPDT [7 W, 170-190 J before aPDT], (IV) Dn+So+aPDT.

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance poses significant challenges in conventional antibiotic treatments for chronic wound infections, highlighting an urgent need for alternative therapeutic strategies. To address this issue, we developed a multifunctional electrospun nanofiber dressing co-loaded with anthocyanin (ATH) and asiaticoside (AS) that possesses antimicrobial activity. The tri-layer dressing contains three functional components: a hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile-anthocyanin (PAN-ATH) layer for pH monitoring, a hydrophobic polycaprolactone (PCL) layer for exudate management, and a water-soluble pullulan-Bletilla striata polysaccharide-asiaticoside (PUL-BSP-AS) layer.

Gum Arabic (GA), a naturally occurring polysaccharide, has emerged as a promising biomaterial for drug delivery systems (DDS) due to its high water solubility, emulsifying capacity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Its structural richness in arabinogalactan facilitates strong interactions with biomolecules, enabling the development of various drug formulations including hydrogels, nanoparticles, liposomes, and emulsions. GA-based DDS have demonstrated significant potential in enhancing the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, protecting bioactive compounds from degradation, and enabling sustained and controlled drug release.

Biopharmaceutics Classification System Class II and IV drugs face significant challenges owing to poor water solubility, restricting their formulation in liquid delivery forms. The use of polymers, including the loading of drugs into nanoparticles, has attracted attention as an effective strategy for improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. These polymer carrier systems possess a hydrophilic outer shell and a hydrophobic inner core that can encapsulate poorly water-soluble drugs and improve their dispersibility in aqueous environments.

Fluoride, a water-soluble environmental contaminant, poses significant risks to hepatic health due to long-term excessive intake, yet effective interventions for NaF-induced liver injury remain limited. Astragalus polysaccharides (APS), the principal bioactive component of Astragalus membranaceus, exhibit immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, and have been shown to protect against alcohol- and chemical-induced liver injury. This study employed animal experiments and integrative multi-omics (network pharmacology, transcriptomics, metabolomics) to investigate the protective mechanisms of APS against NaF toxicity in rats.
