Article Abstract

Background: The current study aims to investigate the expression of miR-599 in serum of patients with ischemic stroke and its correlation with high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9).

Methods: The expression level of miR-24 in serum was detected by real-time PCR, and the expression levels of hs-CRP and MMP-9 were detected by ELISA. Partial correlation analysis was used to explore the correlation be-tween the expression of miR-24 in serum and hs-CRP and MMP-9. ROC analysis was carried out to evaluate the potential diagnostic value.

Results: Our data showed that the expression levels of miR-599, hs-CRP, and MMP-9 in serum of the patients were significantly higher than those of the control group (p < 0.05). Partial correlation analysis showed that there was a positive correlation between the expression of miR-599 and hs-CRP and MMP-9 (r = 0.718, p = 0.000; r = 0.658, p = 0.000; r = 0.878, p = 0.000). Meanwhile, serum levels of miR-599, hs-CRP, and MMP-9 in patients with severe neurological deficit were significantly higher than those in patients with moderate and mild neurological deficit (p < 0.05). Moreover, the expression levels of miR-599, hs-CRP, and MMP-9 in serum of patients with dif-ferent degrees of neurological impairment have different correlations. More importantly, ROC analysis demon-strated that combined use of miR-599, hs-CRP, and MMP-9 demonstrated higher diagnostic value for stroke pa-tients.

Conclusions: Serum miR-599 may be used as a molecular marker in the diagnosis of ischemic stroke and may play an important role in the pathogenesis and development of ischemic stroke in cooperation with hs-CRP and MMP-9.

Background: The primary aim of this study is to investigate the impact of MBS induced weight loss on cognition, and secondary investigate the impact of this weight loss on adipokines, inflammatory factors, vascular markers, mood and physical activity three years after MBS.

Methods: This observational study assessed data from 107 patients with severe obesity (aged 35 to 55 years) from the BARICO (BAriatric surgery Rijnstate and Radboudumc neuroImaging and Cognition in Obesity) study, eligible for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Data were collected before, and at 6, 24 and 36 months after MBS.

Background: High intake of fruits and vegetables is generally associated with reduced levels of inflammation. In line with this, plasma levels of carotenoids have shown inverse associations with inflammatory markers, in particular C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocyte counts. However, it remains unclear to what extent carotenoids are associated with specific leukocyte subsets or other inflammatory markers.

Introduction: In patients enrolled in the Stroke Prevention by Aggressive Reduction in Cholesterol Levels (SPARCL) trial levels of osteopontin, neopterin, N-terminal fragment of pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), myeloperoxidase, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), resistin, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), adiponectin, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), lipoprotein-associated phospholipase-A2 (Lp-PLA2), soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), soluble CD40-ligand (sCD40L), and HDL cholesterol (HDL-c) were measured 1-6 months after the qualifying stroke or TIA. We determined whether any of these biomarkers were associated with disability in case of recurrence.

Methods: Among 463 recurrent strokes, the associations of these biomarkers with the National Institutes of Health-Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel Index, and modified Rankin Score (mRS) measured after 90 days were assessed.

Objective: Buyang Huanwu Decoction (BYHWD), a traditional Chinese herbal formula, has been widely used to manage cardiovascular disorders. However, its cardioprotective mechanisms in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MI/RI) remain unclear. This study aims to investigate its pharmacological mechanisms against MI/RI through network pharmacology and experimental validation.

Background: The Treatment of sleep apnoea Early After Myocardial infarction with Adaptive Servo-Ventilation (TEAM-ASV I) trial showed that adding adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) to treat sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) early after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) improved myocardial salvage and decreased infarct size. It is purported that ASV may mitigate the inflammatory response, cardiac congestion, or fibrosis, but evidence supporting this assertion is sparse.

Methods: This ancillary analysis of the multicentre, randomised, open-label TEAM-ASV I trial assessed patients with analysable blood samples at baseline and 12-week follow-up.
