Article Abstract

Swimming bell kinematics and hydrodynamic wake structures were documented during multiple pulsation cycles of a (Romanes, 1876) medusa swimming in a predominantly linear path. Bell contractions produced pairs of vortex rings with opposite rotational sense. Analyses of the momentum flux in these wake structures demonstrated that vortex dynamics related directly to variations in the medusa swimming speed. Furthermore, a bulk of the momentum flux in the wake was concentrated spatially at the interfaces between oppositely rotating vortices rings. Similar thrust-producing wake structures have been described in models of fish swimming, which posit vortex rings as vehicles for energy transport from locations of body bending to regions where interacting pairs of opposite-sign vortex rings accelerate the flow into linear propulsive jets. These findings support efforts toward soft robotic biomimetic propulsion.

Background: Delirium is a prevalent and serious ICU complication, particularly in elderly or ventilated patients. Accurate assessment is crucial but often inconsistent. Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses' use of the Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC) may be limited without structured training.

The Glymphatic System and Sleep Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by both motor and nonmotor symptoms, including significant sleep disturbances. The glymphatic system, a brain-wide clearance mechanism active during sleep, may play a key role in PD pathology by impairing the removal of toxic proteins like α-synuclein. Dysfunctional glymphatic clearance and disrupted sleep may create a cycle that accelerates neurodegeneration.

Sleep Dysfunction in Older Age Parkinson's Disease.

Sleep Med Clin

September 2025

Older Person Medical Clinic, Suite 3/18 Lambton Road, Broadmeadow, New South Wales, 2292, Australia.

Sleep and circadian disturbances are prevalent in Parkinson's disease (PD) and become increasingly complex in older adults, where aging-related changes, comorbidities, and polypharmacy further disrupt sleep. This review explores the pathophysiology of sleep and circadian dysfunction in aging and PD, highlighting the impact of neurodegenerative changes and neurotransmitter dysregulation. Key sleep disorders in older adults with PD are discussed with a focus on their epidemiology, assessment, and tailored management.

Aim: To assess sleep medicine and obstructive sleep apnea knowledge and management confidence among Greek dentists.

Methods: Postgraduate dental students at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki completed the Assessment of Sleep Knowledge in Medical Education (ASKME) and the knowledge and attitudes towards obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) questionnaires (OSAKA) via an online survey from May to December 2022.

Results: The response rate was 77.

Introduction: In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, African Americans in rural communities faced disproportionate rates of hospitalizations and deaths. The emergence of the omicron variant further exacerbated these disparities, with African American adults approximately four times more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19 compared to their White counterparts. To curb the transmission of the virus, public health professionals advocated COVID-19 mitigation strategies, including testing.
