Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) typically causes febrile illness and arthralgia. However, severe complications such as encephalitis, rhabdomyolysis, and multiorgan dysfunction are increasingly recognised, particularly during epidemics in endemic regions. We report a case of a 61-year old male presenting with progressive flaccid paraparesis and respiratory failure following febrile illness.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus poses a continuing global public health threat due to its outbreaks in poultry farms and zoonotic transmission from birds to humans. In the quest of effective therapeutics against H5N1 infection, antibodies with broad neutralizing activity have attracted significant attention. In this study, we employed a phage display technique to select and identify VHH antibodies with specific neutralizing activity against H5N1 hemagglutinin (HA) from an immune llama-derived antibody library.

Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), which induces an innate immune response against viral infections, is rarely detected in influenza A virus (IAV)-infected cells. Nevertheless, we previously reported that the influenza A viral ribonucleoprotein (vRNP) complex generates looped dsRNAs during RNA synthesis . This finding suggests that IAV possesses a specific mechanism for sequestering dsRNA within infected cells, thereby enabling viral evasion of the innate immune response.

HIV-1-mediated CD4 downregulation is a well-known mechanism that protects infected cells from antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC). While CD4 downregulation by HIV-1 Nef and Vpu proteins has been extensively studied, the contribution of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein (Env) in this mechanism is less understood. While Env is known to retain CD4 in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) through its CD4-binding site (CD4bs), little is known about the mechanisms underlying this process.

Gut dysbiosis and an increased risk of respiratory infection in type 2 diabetes have been well recognised. However, the relationship between the gut and respiratory pathobionts carriage rate in the Type 2 diabetic Malaysian population is understudied. To address the knowledge gap, we profiled the gut and upper respiratory tract microbial composition, as well as the urine metabolome of 31 type 2 diabetic adults and 14 non-diabetes adults.
