Background And Aim: The risk and benefit of non-selective propranolol in patients with tense ascites are controversial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of propranolol as secondary prophylaxis on varix rebleeding and overall mortality in patients with tense ascites.
Methods: This study used a database of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRAS), which provides health insurance to 97.2% of the total population in Korea. A total of 80,071 patients first variceal bleeding as the first decompensated complication enrolled from 2007 to 2014.
Results: There were 2274 patients with large-volume ascites prescribed propranolol as secondary prophylaxis after first varix bleeding. The average prescription dose of propranolol as secondary prophylaxis was 74 mg/day in patients with large-volume ascites. The mean duration of rebleeding was 22.8 months. Result of analysis showed that low-dose propranolol (40-120 mg/day) compared to inadequate propranolol dose (<40 mg/day) as secondary prophylaxis decreased overall mortality and varix rebleeding in patients with tense ascites.
Conclusions: Low-dose propranolol (40-120 mg/day) as secondary prophylaxis for variceal re-bleeding decreased overall mortality and varix rebleeding recurrence in patients with tense ascites.

Background: Migraine is a neurological disorder affecting approximately 12% of the population, more frequent in women, causing disability. Preventive treatment is recommended to prevent chronification and analgesics' abuse and to improve quality of life, but not all candidates receive it. Common preventive drugs include amitriptyline, flunarizine, propranolol, and topiramate.

Arthrofibrosis is a common complication following total knee arthroplasty (approximately 5%), characterized by painful limitation of range of motion and increased soft tissue fibrosis. Women are affected more frequently than men. A distinction is made between primary (early postoperative, global) and secondary forms (mechanical/infectious causes).

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in water are a prominent environmental concern worldwide. Despite advanced oxidation or reduction being appealing transformation approaches, existing technologies face challenges in adaptability to the removal of both electron-rich ECs and ECs with electron-withdrawing moieties. Here, a Janus electrocatalytic membrane was fabricated to induce hydroxyl radicals (OH) and atomic hydrogen (H*) simultaneously and tune redox processes via sequential tactics to achieve adaptable and ultrafast removal of diverse ECs.

Some patients presenting with Parkinson's disease (PD)-like features do not exhibit dopaminergic denervation, complicating clinical categorization. This case report describes a patient with a long-standing upper limb action tremor accompanied by parkinsonian signs, but without evidence of dopaminergic denervation, followed over an extended period of ten years. The case highlights the diagnostic challenges and underscores the importance of longitudinal observation in such atypical presentations.

Objective: Obstructive pulmonary diseases are characterized by airflow limitation secondary to airway wall thickening, airway narrowing and increased mucus secretion. Saffron ( L.) has shown different effects including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties and promising effects for treating multiple disorders.
