Article Abstract

A water-soluble and charge-tagged palladium complex (PdMAI) was found to function inside breast cancer live cells of the MCF-7 lineage as an efficient catalyst for cross-coupling reaction. PdMAI, bearing two ionophilic task-specific ionic liquids as ligands, efficiently catalyzed both in cellulo Suzuki and Buchwald-Hartwig amination reactions. For the first time, therefore, the Buchwald-Hartwig amination is described to occur inside the highly complex cellular environment. The 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) core was used as the base for the syntheses, and two π-extended fluorescent derivatives (BTD-2APy) and (BTD-1AN), which were found to emit in the green and red channels, had impressive mitochondrial affinity. These chromophores allowed for selective mitochondrial imaging and tracking.

The depletion of mineral resources and the escalating environmental pollution caused by industrial waste have underscored the urgent need for efficient metal recovery from these waste streams. This research focuses on the selective extraction of Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) from industrial lead plant waste, employing a synergistic combination of Dichloromethane (DCM) and Aliquat 336 (A336) and individual solvent extraction using these solvents. The accuracy of the synthesized task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) (EtNCNHC and BuNCNHC) was investigated using FTIR and H-NMR analysis.

The growing demand for ultra-low sulfur fuels has intensified interest in recovering strategic metals from the large volumes of hazardous hydrodesulfurization catalysts that are discarded yearly. This work evaluates a task-specific ionic liquid, tri-n-octylammonium bis(2-,4-,4-trimethylpentyl)-phosphinate [TOA][Cy272], synthesized by the acid-base neutralization of tri-n-octylamine and Cyanex 272. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed complete proton transfer and the formation of a stable ion pair.

Polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) have undergone substantial advancements in their selectivity and efficiency, driven by their increasing deployment in separation processes, environmental remediation, and sensing applications. This review presents recent progress in the development of PIMs, focusing on strategies to enhance ion and molecule selectivity through the incorporation of novel carriers, including ionic liquids and task-specific extractants, as well as through polymer functionalization techniques. Improvements in mechanical and chemical stability, achieved via the utilization of high-performance polymers such as polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyether ether ketone (PEEK), as well as cross-linking approaches, are critically analyzed.

For the first time, supported ionic liquid polymers (SILPs) incorporating sulfone and dimethyl sulfoxide units are synthesized and tested as bifunctional heterogeneous materials in the valorization of biomass-derived sugars (fructose and glucose). These catalysts exhibit remarkable efficiency in fructose dehydration, yielding 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) at gram scale. The optimal ratio of sulfone to dimethyl sulfoxide groups is determined to be critical for reaction selectivity.
