Several studies have noted a correlation between retinal degeneration and traumatic encephalopathy (TE) making the retina a leading candidate for detection and assessment. Scattering-angle-resolved optical coherence tomography (SAR-OCT) is a candidate imaging modality to detect sub-resolution changes in retinal microstructure. SAR-OCT images of murine retinas that experience a hypoxic insult-euthanasia by isoflurane overdose-are presented. A total of 4 SAR-OCT measurement parameters are reported in 6 longitudinal experiments: blood flow volume fraction, total retinal thickness, reflectance index, and scattering angle. As each mouse expires, blood flow volume fraction decreases, total retinal thickness increases, reflectance index decreases, and scattering angle diversity increases. Contribution of the retinal vasculature to scattering angle diversity is discussed. Results of this study suggest the utility of SAR-OCT to measure TE using scattering angle diversity contrast in the retina.

The crystallization behavior of ionic liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [BMIM] hexafluorophosphate [PF] and chloride [Cl] is investigated upon confinement in 2.3 or 8.2 nm diameter silica nanopore arrays, along with the effects of covalently modifying the pore walls with 1-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)3-methylimidazolium [TMS-MIM] groups.

To ensure safety, pharmaceuticals are rigorously tested for lipopolysaccharide (LPS) contamination, as this can trigger severe immune reactions in patients. Low Endotoxin Recovery (LER), describing the masking of spiked LPS controls in Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) assays, has been associated with the presence of chelating agents and surfactants in pharmaceutical formulations. The addition of excipients, such as Mg2, have shown the ability to mitigate the effects of LER, however, inconsistencies in various studies regarding the influence of the excipients on LPS aggregate characteristics and LER occurrence hinder a clear understanding of the mechanisms underlying LER.

This study demonstrates the successful fabrication of nanostructured Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films combining the conjugated copolymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene--3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PDOF--PEDOT) with spherical and triangular silver nanoparticles (AgNP). The LB technique allowed precise control over the molecular arrangement and distribution of the nanoparticles at the air-water interface, resulting in compact, reproducible and structurally ordered nanocomposite films. The structural and morphological properties of the interfacial monolayers and LB films were investigated using surface pressure-area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, polarization modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and quartz crystal microbalance.

The study of the self-assembly of surfactants in aqueous solutions, though a traditional field, remains fascinating and full of novelty. In this article, the anionic perfluorodecanoic acid surfactant (PFA) is separately complexed with three hydroxyalkylamines (monoethanolamine (MEA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethanolamine (TEA)) in aqueous solutions. The transformation of aggregate morphologies from spherical unilamellar to nanotubes and then to spherical bilamellar is observed at room temperature, which is confirmed by cryo-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM).

This study investigates how hydrophobic and hydrophilic modifications at the C-terminus of the base peptide, KFEFEFKFK (KbpK), affect the hydrogel macroscopic properties. By the incorporation of phenylalanine (F, hydrophobic) and lysine (K, hydrophilic) residues, four variants, KbpK-K, KbpK-F, KbpK-KF, and KbpK-FK, were designed and evaluated. pH-concentration phase diagrams and Fourier transform infrared confirmed clear links showing how peptide hydrophobicity and charge influence β-sheet formation and macroscopic phase behavior.
