Cataracts, a leading cause of blindness in the world, are commonly treated by replacing the ocular lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The material and structure of the IOL are major factors in their efficacy, affecting, among other characteristics, the optics of the eye. In the recent research record, two optical properties have emerged as standardized characterization methods for IOL optics: (1) optical transmittance and (2) optical scattering.

Background: Expelled droplet count is an important factor when investigating the efficacy of face coverings since higher droplet counts indicate an increased possibility of disease transmission for airborne viruses such as COVID-19. While there is some published work relating facemask style to expelled droplet count during speech, there is no published data regarding the effectiveness of traditional Islamic face coverings such as the ghutra and niqab commonly worn by men and women in the Arabian Peninsula.
Objectives: Measure the effectiveness of worn traditional Islamic face coverings in reducing expelled droplet count during speech.
Purpose: Clinical intensity-based optical coherence tomographic retinal imaging is unable to resolve some of the earliest changes to Alzheimer's disease (AD) neurons. The aim of this pilot study was to demonstrate that scattering-angle-resolved optical coherence tomography (SAROCT), which is sensitive to changes in light scattering angle, is a candidate retinal imaging modality for early AD detection. SAR-OCT signal data may be sensitive to changes in intracellular constituent morphology that are not detectable with conventional OCT.

Because there is a complex interplay between these metrics, no previous work has obtained the best performance in all three metrics simultaneously. We demonstrate that a high-power supercontinuum source, in combination with parallel spectral-domain OCT, achieves an unparalleled combination of resolution, speed, and sensitivity.
