Herein we describe a successful protocol for graphite exfoliation using a biphasic liquid system (water/dichloromethane, DCM) containing ionic liquids (ILs; 1,3-dibenzylimidazolium benzoate- and 1-naphthoate). The use of (surface active) IL and sonication led to stable DCM/water (O/W) emulsion, which enhanced graphene formation, suppressed its re-aggregation and decreased shear/cavitation damage. The O/W emulsion stabilization by the ILs was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS), whereas their interaction with the graphene sheets were described by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Moreover, a comprehensive investigation on cavitation-based exfoliation in the O/W systems was performed to assess the importance of operational parameters, including, the type of ultrasound processor, ultrasound power and insonation, and the influence of the exfoliation medium.

Plastics are widely used materials composed of polymers and various additives to achieve specific properties. Their composition is often highly complex, particularly in post-consumer plastic waste. As mechanical recycling faces increasing limitations, chemistry-driven strategies are attracting growing interest to improve plastic recovery.

Due to their high reactivity, organolithium and organomagnesium addition to ketones is usually performed under inert atmosphere at low temperature. Recent work has shown that, by dissolving the substrate in deep eutectic solvents (DES), these processes can be carried out on the benchtop, in air at room temperature. Surprisingly, the organometallic reagent, added to the DES from an organic solution, works in these conditions and gives better yields than in the standard setup.

Solventless fed-batch experiments at elevated pressures were performed to gain insights into the performance of triethylamine as an extraction base during the direct hydrogenation of CO to formic acid. No formic acid was observed in the bulk liquid after several hours of reaction using an Au/TiO catalyst. Analysis on the spent catalyst revealed significant formic acid build-up within the catalyst pores.

The lumbar intervertebral disc exhibits a complex physiological structure with interactions between various segments, and its components are extremely complex. The material properties of different components in the lumbar intervertebral disc, especially the water content (undergoing dynamic change as influenced by age, degeneration, mechanical loading, and proteoglycan content) - critically determine its mechanical properties. When the lumbar intervertebral disc is under continuous pressure, water seeps out, and after the pressure is removed, water re-infiltrates.

Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) is a common side effect of many chemotherapeutic anticancer treatments. The only CIA treatment used clinically is a hypothermic cap over the scalp which works through cutaneous vasoconstriction. However, these caps are expensive, often extremely painful, logistically challenging and bulky, and may produce heterogeneous results.
