Article Abstract

Six new dimeric lignans (1-6) and one new lignan glycoside (16) were isolated from Forsythia viridissima roots along with nine known lignans (7-15). Spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods were used to determine these new structures and their absolute configurations. Among these compounds, dimatairesinol (1) and viridissimaols A-E (2-6) were assigned as dimers of dibenzylbutyrolactone analogues. Furthermore, the isolated compounds were evaluated for their antiviral activities against coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) and human rhinovirus 1B (HRV1B). In these tests, compounds 12 and 15 showed antiviral effects against CVB3 infection with IC values of 15.4 and 36.4 μM, respectively, while 2, 3, 8, and 9 showed activities against HRV1B with IC values of 45.7, 47.5, 13.0, and 43.2 μM, respectively.

The Forsythia has been used in herbal medicine, and the leaf is also expected to contain various putative bioactive substances. In this study, we investigated the effects of Forsythia viridissima leaf extract (FLE) on bone metabolism. The anti-osteoporotic effect of FLE was determined in male rats fed a low-calcium diet.

Article Synopsis
  • MS imaging (MSI) is effective for studying metabolites in biological samples but struggles with isomer identification and matrix effects due to the lack of liquid chromatography separation.
  • A new platform, OLE-LC-Qtof-MS, combines online extraction and liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry to address these limitations, allowing for better differentiation of isomers and improved quantification of metabolites.
  • In a study using flowers of Forsythia viridissima and Jasminum nudiflorum, this method successfully identified a total of 87 metabolites, demonstrating distinct spatial distributions and the ability to differentiate specific isomers like chlorogenic acids within the petal structure.

Coronavirus can cause various diseases, from mild symptoms to the recent severe COVID-19. The coronavirus RNA genome is frequently mutated due to its RNA nature, resulting in many pathogenic and drug-resistant variants. Therefore, many medicines should be prepared to respond to the various coronavirus variants.

(Nakai) Nakai is an endemic species in Korea. We present the second complete chloroplast genome sequence of showing that the chloroplast genome is 156,376 bp in length containing four subregions: a large single-copy (LSC) region of 87,097 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,859 bp, and a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 25,710 bp. The genome contains 131 genes including 88 protein-coding genes, 35 s, and eight rRNAs.
