Marine hotspots are areas prioritized for conservation and monitoring, based on their sensitivity or vulnerability. Understanding the natural variability of resident organisms in such critical areas is integral for deciphering human-induced perturbations to formulate appropriate management strategies. Five marine hotspots along northwest India, comprising three active harbours and two marine protected areas, were surveyed seasonally to understand the macrofaunal distribution patterns and functional traits. Among the 33 macrobenthic taxa, Polychaeta constituted the dominant taxon. Spatial variability was prominent due to differences in terms of polychaete species types, relative abundances and functional trait matrices. Monsoonal hypoxia altered the macrobenthic species and functional composition. CCA revealed a combination of natural (texture, DO, salinity) and anthropogenic (PHc, SS, ammonia) hydro-sedimentological variables as key drivers for the polychaete distribution patterns. The results are expected to improve the understanding of the variability and functioning of polychaete taxocommunity within the ecologically and economically significant "marine hotspots".

To date, environmental conditions have been enough to act as an effective barrier to prevent non-indigenous species from arriving and establishing in Arctic Canada. However, rapidly changing climatic conditions are creating more suitable habitats for non-indigenous species to potentially establish and become invasive. Concurrently, shipping traffic in parts of Arctic Canada has increased by over 250% since 1990, providing an effective vector for transporting non-indigenous species to the region.

This study presents the first integrated assessment of plastic pollution at the Kura River delta, where the river enters the hydrologically enclosed Caspian Sea. We applied a modular toolbox comprising four complementary components: high-resolution hydrodynamic modeling to predict debris convergence zones, UAV-based mapping to survey shoreline conditions, automated object-based image analysis for debris detection and classification, and standardized field monitoring by trained community participants for ground-truthing and source identification. Using this framework, we identified debris accumulation hotspots and developed a replicable approach for assessing plastic pollution in semi-enclosed systems.

Assessing pollutant fate in highly impacted industrial harbors is challenging, yet crucial for effective ecological risk assessment. This study analyzed key aspects of pollutant fate: spatial distribution, sources, and biomagnification for the organic pollutants polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and alkylphenols (APs) in phytoplankton and zooplankton across Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan. Spatial variability identified harbor entrances and marine outfall as key hotspots for all three contaminant groups.

Mediterranean ecosystems have been grazed by livestock for thousands of years. While considered both a major anthropogenic stressor and a potential habitat conservation tool, the effects of livestock grazing on vertebrate populations remain poorly understood. Our study focused on goat and sheep grazing on a large island off the coast of Greece in order to shed light on (1) the nature of the relationship between livestock grazing and vertebrate assemblages, and (2) the mediating mechanisms.
