Background: This study aims to evaluate variation in somatic symptoms by age using patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ) depression scores, which may be helpful in identifying depression.
Methods: The study evaluated a nationally representative cross-sectional sample of community-dwelling adults in Japan in 2013. We utilized the PHQ to identify risk for depression, with PHQ ≥ 10 defining at least moderate depression. Bivariate and factor analyses were used to capture underlying patterns in self-reported symptoms over a 30 day period; aged-stratified multivariate logistic regression was performed to further explore associations between age, symptoms, and depression.
Results: Of 3753 respondents, 296 (8, 95% CI 7.0-8.8) reported a PHQ ≥ 10; 42% of these were male and mean age was 51.7 years old (SD = 18.6). Multivariate analysis showed that presence of fatigue and malaise (OR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.4) was significantly associated with PHQ ≥ 10. After stratification by age, PHQ ≥ 10 was associated with gastrointestinal complaints among 18-39 year olds (OR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.0-2.9); fatigue and malaise (OR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.1-3.1) among 40-64 year olds; and fatigue and malaise (OR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.1-3.0) as well as extremity pain (OR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.0-2.8) in over 65 year olds.
Conclusion: Age-related somatic symptom correlates of PHQ ≥ 10 differ across the lifespan. Predominantly gastrointestinal symptoms in younger patients, and generalized fatigue, malaise, and musculoskeletal pain in older groups were observed. In order for screening physicians to proactively identify depression, awareness of age-related somatic symptoms is warranted.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is characterized by unexplained fatigue, post-exertional malaise (PEM), and cognitive dysfunction. ME/CFS patients often report a prodrome consistent with infection. We present a multi-omics analysis based on plasma metabolomic and proteomic profiling, and immune responses to microbial stimulation, before and after exercise.

Background: This study evaluated the impact of aging on the frequency and prevalent symptoms of Long COVID, also termed post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2, using a previously developed Long COVID research index (LCRI) of 41 self-reported symptoms in which those with 12 or more points were classified as likely to have Long COVID.
Methods: We analyzed community-dwelling participants ≥ 60 years old (2662 with prior infection, 461 controls) compared to participants 18-59 years (7549 infected, 728 controls) in the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery adult (RECOVER-Adult) cohort ≥ 135 days post-onset.
Results: Compared to the Age 18-39 group, the adjusted odds of LCRI ≥ 12 were higher for the Age 40-49 group (odds ratio [OR] = 1.

Purpose: Long COVID-19 is a growing public health concern, but its long-term burden and predictors remain underexplored, particularly in underrepresented populations.
Methods: This four-year prospective cohort study was conducted in Saudi Arabia, enrolling adults with confirmed acute COVID-19 from multiple affiliated healthcare centers between March 2020 and March 2024. Of 1,521 screened patients, 816 were enrolled and followed for up to four years (median: 24 months).

Animal studies have demonstrated that mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) possesses various therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic properties. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of administering MSC-CM as a treatment for patients with generalized fatigue. The MSC-CM used in this study was derived from human adipose tissue and umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells cultured in a medium free of animal-derived components to avoid the risk of infection.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and fibromyalgia (FM) are overlapping syndromes characterized by persistent fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and post-exertional malaise (PEM), yet they lack objective biomarkers for diagnosis and treatment. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21), a stress-responsive metabolic hormone, may offer a promising avenue to distinguish subtypes within these patient populations. In this cross-sectional study, plasma FGF-21 levels were measured in 250 patients (FM = 47; ME = 99; ME + FM = 104) and 54 healthy controls.
