Article Abstract

Atmospheric environmental capacity is an important reference in environmental planning. To meet the PM standard, a new method is proposed to balance the capacity among cities of Guangdong, with screening of the most unfavorable meteorological year and combining it with the regional transportation calculated by the CAMx-PSAT module. Pollutant overloading and capacity scenarios were also calculated. The results showed that, under the constraints of the cities' annual PM ≤ 35 μg·m, the capacities of SO, NO, NH, and PM in Guangdong were about 6.8×10 tons, 1.35×10 tons, 4.6×10 tons, and 5.1×10 tons, respectively. Based on the benchmark scenario, SO emissions in Guangdong were overloaded by 10%, and the emissions of NO, NH, and PM exceeded by 12%, 9%, and 20%, respectively, compared to those of the capacity scenario. Ranked by the number of overloaded species in Guangdong, the cities of Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, and Qingyuan were on top. When achieving the capacity scenario, the annual PM concentration in Guangdong was about 30 μg·m, which meets the national secondary ambient air quality standard.

Divergent effects of successive drought and flooding on photosynthesis in wheat and barley.

Climate change is leading to increases in extreme weather events, notably increasing both droughts and floods, which undermine food security. Although each stress individually has been well studied, little is known about the response of cereals to successive water stresses, condition that often occurs in real-world scenarios. To address this gap, we have compared physiological responses of wheat and barley cultivars to cycles of drought and flooding.

Purpose: Neonatal mortality is a significant global health issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to identify and understand the factors contributing to high neonatal mortality rates in the cities of Kerman and Bam, Iran, to develop effective strategies for improvement.

Design/methodology/approach: We employed systems dynamics to develop Causal Loop Diagrams that capture qualitative interactions among determinants of neonatal mortality.

Prospects for silvicultural enhancement of fire resistance in mesic westside forests of the Pacific Northwest.

Increasing wildfire activity in mesic, temperate Pacific Northwest forests west of the Cascade Range crest has stimulated interest in understanding whether alternative forest management practices could reduce risk of stand-replacing fire. To explore how management can enhance fire resistance in these forests and assess tradeoffs among resistance enhancement, carbon sequestration and storage, and economic returns, we conducted 40-year simulations of stand development with BioSum, a framework for conducting landscape analysis with the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS), utilizing a statistically representative and spatially balanced sample of Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) plots. Simulation outcomes under business-as-usual silviculture were contrasted with fire-aware silviculture, and treatment optimization logic was developed and applied to represent landscape-scale outcomes under business-as-usual and fire-focused management scenarios.

Background: Massive hemorrhage is a leading cause of mortality among trauma patients. To date, whole blood (WB) remains the preferred resuscitation fluid on the battlefield and in pre-hospital emergency care. However, components of WB inevitably undergo storage-related damage, and differences in the duration of storage may lead to varying clinical outcomes after transfusion.
