Secreted peptide hormones play pivotal roles in plant growth and development. So far, CEPs (C-TERMINALLY ENCODED PEPTIDEs) have been shown to act through CEP receptors (CEPRs) to control nitrogen (N)-demand signalling, nodulation, and lateral root development. Secreted CEP peptides can enter the xylem stream to act as long-distance signals, but evidence also exists for CEPs acting in local circuits. Recently, CEP peptide species varying in sequence, length, and post-translational modifications have been identified. A more comprehensive understanding of CEP biology requires insight into the in planta function of CEP genes, CEP peptide biogenesis, the components of CEP signalling cascades and, finally, how CEP peptide length, amino-acid composition, and post-translational modifications affect biological activity. In this review, we highlight recent studies that have advanced our understanding in these key areas and discuss some future directions.

Background/aims: The placenta expresses and releases specific microRNAs (miRNAs) into the maternal circulation that may influence insulin secretion during pregnancy. We hypothesized that specific decidual/placental miRNAs are associated with maternal insulin secretion during pregnancy.
Methods: In the Genetics of Glucose regulation in Gestation and Growth (Gen3G) prospective cohort, we estimated maternal insulin secretion using the Stumvoll first phase index derived from an oral glucose tolerance test at ~26 weeks of gestation.

Melittin (MEL), a cationic amphipathic peptide derived from bee venom, exhibits dual roles in mitochondrial physiology, with both cytoprotective and cytotoxic outcomes. This review synthesizes current findings on MEL-induced modulation of mitochondrial pathways in normal and cancer cells. Beyond its well-documented roles in apoptosis regulation, MEL influences mitochondrial function by altering membrane potential, regulating respiratory chain activity, and impacting ATP production.

Objective And Design: Septic patients often exhibit disruption of the normal hematopoiesis, leading to hematological abnormalities such as anaemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. We hypothesized that sepsis-induced changes in bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) contribute to the abnormal hematopoiesis observed in these patients.
