Article Abstract

Background: There is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (VDD) in India. Molecular mechanisms suggest a strong relationship between vitamin D and growth factors. However, there is a paucity of literature with regard to a relationship between insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) and vitamin D particularly in subjects with VDD. The objective of the study was to assess the relationship between growth factors and serum vitamin D-parathormone (PTH) status in school girls and study the impact of vitamin D supplementation on growth factors in pre-pubertal girls with VDD.

Methods: Our study subjects were apparently healthy school girls aged 6-18 years. The baseline height, weight, body mass index (BMI), pubertal status, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD), PTH, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 were assessed in 847 girls aged 6-18 years and in 190 pre-pubertal girls with VDD following supplementation.

Results: The mean age, BMI and serum 25OHD of girls were 11.5±3.2 years, 18.7±4.8 kg/m2 and 9.9±5.6 ng/mL, respectively. VDD was observed in 94.6% of girls. Unadjusted serum IGF-1 levels and IGF-1/IGFBP-3 molar ratio were significantly higher in girls with severe VDD as compared to girls with mild-to-moderate VDD. However, these differences disappeared when adjusted for age, height or sexual maturation. The serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels increased significantly post supplementation with vitamin D.

Conclusions: There were no differences in serum IGF-1 levels and the IGF-1/IGFBP-3 molar ratio among VDD categories when adjusted for age, height and sexual maturation in girls. Vitamin D supplementation resulted in a significant increase in serum IGF-1 levels in VDD pre-pubertal girls.

Purpose: We aimed to compare the effects of atelocollagen (AC) and individual growth factors on the expression of key molecular markers associated with tendon healing.

Methods: C2C12 myoblasts were cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) containing 5% fetal bovine serum (FBS) and treated with 1 nM or 10 nM of Atelocollagen (AC), bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), or vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) for 5 days. After 5 days of treatment, cells were harvested from the culture medium, and Western blot analysis was performed to quantify the expression of phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK), Collagen type I (Col I), Collagen type Ⅲ (Col Ⅲ), and Tenascin C (TnC).

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of some environment- and animal-based factors, such as body condition score (BCS) on 15-20 days before parturition, parity, and calving season on colostrum dry matter (DM), fat, solids-nonfat (SNF), protein, and lactose contents as well as colostrum and calf's serum immunoglobulin (IgG, IgA, and IgM), IGF-1, and lactoferrin concentrations in buffaloes. Therefore, the components of colostrum (at the first milking) and calf serum samples (at 24-48 h and 28 days after birth) from 86 Anatolian buffalo cows were analyzed by an infrared milk analyzer and ELISA test. The high BCS enhanced colostrum DM, fat, and IgG content; calf serum IgG concentration at 24-48 h, and lactoferrin at 28 days compared to low BCS.

Purpose: To investigated the effect of pediatric massage combined with comprehensive management on height improvement in children with short stature.

Patients And Methods: This retrospective analysis included medical records of 80 children diagnosed with short stature, who received treatment at Wuhu Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between April 2022 and April 2023. According to the recorded treatment modalities, patients were divided into two groups: the control group received standard comprehensive management (including psychological health guidance, diet, sleep, exercise), while the massage group received additional pediatric syndrome-based massage therapy alongside comprehensive treatment.

Objective: Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is thought to play an important role in regulating skeletal muscle mass and function, with its decline potentially linked to age-related frailty and sarcopenia. Given the limitations of pharmacological and nutritional interventions, exercise may serve as a potential non-pharmacological strategy to modulate IGF-1 levels. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluates the effects of exercise interventions on serum IGF-1 levels in older adults with frailty and/or sarcopenia using a meta-analysis approach.

Institute of Physical Education, Health and Leisure Studies, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan; Department of Psychology, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. Electronic address:

This study investigated the effects of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE) and MIAE combined with isometric resistance exercise on a whole-body vibration (WBV) platform (MIAE+WBV) compared with the effects of no exercise (NEI) on neurocognitive and molecular indices in 71 sedentary, healthy postmenopausal women. Participants were randomly assigned to MIAE (n = 23), MIAE+WBV (n = 23), and NEI (n = 25) groups. Neurocognitive measures, including accuracy rate (AR), reaction time (RT), and electroencephalogram-based event-related potentials (P2, N2, and P3 components) during the Stroop task, in addition to serum levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), norepinephrine (NE), osteocalcin (OC), carboxylated OC (cOC), and uncarboxylated OC (ucOC), were evaluated before and after the intervention.
